My friend Jason wanted the two of us to meet at the range today.
He loves shooting cast bullets in his Springfield 1903, 30-06 Springfield ! !

Here is a photo of Jason with his rifle and the group he shot at 50 yards with the plain based NOE Hunter.

Nice shooting...I just love those old guns! Ben, I can't tell from the photo; what are the rear sights?

Nice work & fine shooting.

Better get Jason a hat. That sun is nasty & unforgiving. I prefer a straw hat this time of year if out long. Protects your ears & face better. Feels mighty nice if you dunk it in water too.

He will find that they are really habit forming! I started with just one in the safe, but they breed when you close the door. Don't know how many are in there now, even though I have been thinning the herd!

I have 4 springfields. I shot two today....my mark I and this national match clone. Both can shoot better than I can. Thanks to Ben, I can enjoy this sport. I had my hat, but we were under our shooting canopy all morning, so I did not have it on.

Jason,
All my rifles can shoot better then I can...but some days they let me have a glimmer of hope!:)

After a long list of medical problems by 1996 I had to quit shooting pistol and Hi-Power. That left only benchrest for a competitive outlet. I joined the CBA because they have military rifle shoots, originally only postal until 2006. I have little interest is rifles newer than me! The 1903 Springfield and its 03A3 off spring will outshoot any other military rifle made with cast bullets. Go to the CBA site and count the records made with '03's. If you shoot them enough, you will learn how to hold them and make them preform, it just takes 10 years of practice or so.

Jason is young enough to be a champion when he grows up, with practice!

Thanks Ric,

Jason has really come a long way in a very short period of time. He is pretty good.

That stock was split from one very straight grained tree.

Jason,
If you decide you ever need a new rifle, i know where you can pick up some money real quick towards the new purchase....just saying lol.

300BLK,

Yes, you're correct.
I'm in error, it is not a Lyman 48.

Sorry,
Ben

Malcolm,

We run a 12 volt / 120 volt inverter plugged into the lighter socket of the truck.
I take a 50 foot extension cord.
That little fan is a life saver.

Ben,

Great! He must be a good athlete. The three closest things to benchrest shooting are: bowling, horseshoes and pitching a softball. Really encourage him about competition, as the first wave of us guys are averaging 70 years old. We know 90% about reloading and 90% about shooting the Springfields, BUT!! We need younger guys to take us to the next level.

Must agree with RicinYakima. Need not only younger guys, but also some
younger gals. If shooting, and reloading, and casting, etc. is to have a
long run future, it will take both sexes and much more youth than at the
present time.

Nice shooting. He should be quite pleased with that group.
