My pup tree'd a Lynx

About 8:30 this evening I was in my loading room and Biscuit started barking big time. Must have a squirrel tree'd for sure. Got my 22 and went out around to the backside and her hair was up big time. At that point I realized that her barking had been more intense. When I got there and looked through the scope, I saw yellowish brown and some movement about 35 feet up a spruce. Just thought it was our cat. Brainless wonder. Went back to the house to tell Karyn that Felix was way up a tree. But Felix was snoozing on the back of the couch. Grabbed my binoculars and went back fast because Biscuit had a stray tree'd.
Stood back and put the binoculars up and there was a feline face with pointy ears on one side of the trunk and a butt and legs on the other. Called Biscuit right over as she was under the tree and the Lynx was staring down at Biscuit. Very fortunate that the Lynx went up the tree rather then through my dog. It appeared to be a young cat about 25 to 30 pounds or so. Big enough to have Biscuit for dinner.

Not the best picture, but you can see the ears and face left of the trunk.

My worry in her wanting to defend our territory, is not having the knowledge about something like this cat or a Wolverine, which we get on a rare occasion, is lack of understanding the dangers of over doing her job. Bears I'm not worried about, but lack of knowledge and a fast critter, bad news. Wolves can be a danger if you tie up dogs, people would come home and find blood, hair and a collar.
Fortunately Biscuit obeys almost instantly. She stays in a 5 acre circle of our 40, and she's only at the extreme inside of that 5 acres if you are close to that side. I guess what I'm saying is she always keeps me as the moving center and is rarely more that 50 yards away.

I'm still amazed how the sound of a dogs bark will run a big cat up a tree,, yet a tiny little 10 pound butthole cat will make the same dog run off.

Probably instinct from when the dogs were wolfs and ran in packs. If one was hot on your tail more were sure to follow. I guess. But I really don't know. But that sounds as good as anything.

I was preoccupied in my loading room setting up a new press and was not noticing the different tone in Biscuits voice. When I got outside it was obvious something was different.. I usually pay better attention. At that time of day my radar is turned down to lower threat levels. It won't be turned down for a while now.

Rick you might be right. When I got a good look a that cat's face concentration on my pup, I was thinking that the cat was changing it's mind about the threat Biscuit offered.
