New scope for the 788

waco

Springfield, Oregon
I haven't shot this rifle in several years. It has never seen cast. That's about to change. I stole one of my wife's scopes she was not using to put on my "Green Machine" .308

The scope is a Vortex Crossfire II 6x24x50 with a BDC style reticle.

I loaded up some NOE 30 Hunter PB bullets with both Redot and Unique to try out. Hope to get out soon!

Umm, I really like that.

I also have a 788 in 308 Win.
Mine is a nail driver.

Have you done a side X side comparison (as to accuracy ) with the same bullets conventional lube vs. PC ? ?

Well Waco, have to admit that you are sure colorful. Would bet that your
788 will be a cast bullet tack driver. Keep us posted.

Sure looks clean, like it just came off the sales room rack!
Sure wish I had picked up a couple way back when!

When I bought mine about 6-7 months ago, the metal was about 99%.

The wood was about 90%.
I refinished the stock.
I'm happy with the results.
Thanks for your nice comments fellows !:):):)

I think the 788 was a bit of an embarassment to Remington.
Their " Flag Ship ", the Rem. 700 was a great rifle, but in the accuracy dept., the 788 would stay with it and in some cases edge it out. I think it put them in an odd and unusual situation. The 788 was a rifle that cost 1/3 to 1/2 of the price of a Rem. 700. The typical hunter who wanted a reliable and accurate center fire rifle would often pass up the Rem. 700 and buy the Rem. 788. For Remington, .....what do we do now ? ? ?

I've read that machining the 788 action was costly for Remington. I'm not absolutely certain why Remington dropped the 788 line of rifles. Most likely there were several reasons for their decision.

Bench resters still grab them up when they can find them and buy the rifles just for the action. Then they will build a " high dollar " benchrest rifle with the action.

If you've ever shot / or own one, you know that they are super accurate rifles, regardless of the caliber.
