New shooter

My store manager asked me a few weeks back to take him shooting. He has fired a few 22s and some shotgun.
No way I was passing on this. I really enjoy introducing new shooters to my favorite pastime. I asked a few simple questions. What do you want to shoot- I don't know? How much do you want to hurt-umm, hurt?

We went out this morning. I wanted him to try a variety of stuff. I took the 1911, the CZ75B, the 624, and the GP100. Also along were the AR in 300BO and the Win 94 in 375 Win.

The 375 was loaded with a 200 gr cast and 25 gr of 5744 for 1700fps. Enough for him to experience some recoil but not enough to really punish. The rest of the stuff was standard loads I keep around. You know, a 120 TC and 4 gr of HP38, 4.8 gr of Promo and a 200 SWC, a 265 swc and 4 gr of TG, that kind of stuff.

We had a blast. Fired a total of 445 rounds. Two bowling pins are worse for the wear. He enjoyed himself and that is what matters most. He really shot the 1911 well.

This is my favorite kind of range day.

My wife now refers to my GP100 as "The gateway gun" as it has introduced close to 20 people to the shooting sports. Must have 15 K plus rounds on it. Being a SS Ruger it hardly shows wear at all.

Yeah, I've got one and they are hell for stout. Can't imagine what it would take to break one.

They may never own a firearm but I can swing some opinions towards responsible firearm ownership.

"Gateway Gun", that cracked me right up! So you really are a "pusher", I just thought that was your day job ;)

Well, good on you, Brad. I love to help newbies learn.

Unfortunately with the way things are today I must screen out any intensely liberal people because it seems they are always the ones going off the deep end & I can't have teaching them on my conscious. Sad but true.

Good job, Brad. Making converts, one person at a time. Very good. I was on pretty similar mission this AM.

I was teaching a 1st year college student young lady to do double taps with a 9mm, among other things
this AM. Second training session, started with .22 rifles, peep, scope and iron sights. Then .22 Ruger std auto,
and CZ75 .22LR, and then CZ75 9mm. Started slow fire only, but she was asking about shooting faster and more like
for self defense, so I sped things up at the end. Finally she was doing good double taps at 10 yds on a IPSC silhouette
and getting mostly A hits. Finished up with her firing 4 good shots from the 4" 629, 10 gr Unique/240 Keith. Good
medium load, about 1050 fps, but the most powerful thing she has fired. She put them into 1.5" at 10 yds standing. :)

Empowering women, for real.

I have taught her two older brothers to shoot since they were 5, one is now in USMC, the other is signed up for
boot camp late this year is the first slot open for his desired MOS. She never was interested in shooting when younger,
but asked me to teach her now. First lesson a couple of weeks ago. If she keeps it up she will be pretty good,
great student, and is having a lot of fun with it, wants to do it some more.

Classes? I wouldn't mind a few classes on shooting better. What time Bill?

I'm not sure how much I could teach you about regular shooting, but perhaps some things about
faster shooting, reloads, smooth safe draws and such from IPSC/USPSA style shooting.

I do enjoy introducing new shooters to the hobby. It is fun when they get that "Hey, I did it!"
grin as they develop improved skills.

That kind of stuff would be new to me. I'm no bullseye shooter but know nothing of speed/accuracy shooting.

T'is all a matter of what trips your trigger. Cowboy action has no appeal to me
but understand why it does to others. I like benchrest, but it has little appeal to
many. T'is what it T'is!
