Look at my new to me machine:)
Its a shop task 1720 it came with a 3 jaw, 4 jaw, bench, tons of tooling and collets, dead center, live center, multiple drill chucks.
It is tight as a drum and everything works spot on.
All gear sets included for threading as well. I am pretty stoked been bumming off buddies for a long time now I am really dangerous in my own shop!

Congratulation on your acquisition. I foresee many long hours of learning ahead. There are several folks here that can give you good guidance.

Have one on hand will be amazing!
I have been using them for years off and on.
I had a really knowledgeable machinist teach me the ropes back when I was rebuilding automatic transmissions for a living.
Our shop had one and it was my right hand for cleaning up drum and bearing surfaces. We also used to machine full bearing package turbo 400’s for the racing world. We would machine all surfaces to accept bearings and do away with the wear washers.
Definitely will be asking questions here as well many very very knowledgeable guys on this craft here!

After a while you'll wonder how you lived without it. Congrats on the acquisition!

Enjoy your new toy!

4 decades ago I was in the Merchant Marine. Most of the ships I sailed on had complete machine shops on board or at least a lathe. I spent a lot of off watch hours learning about mills and lathes. Made a bunch of little parts.

I wish I could get something like that now but tight space and tighter budget...

All those ships are gone. Scrapped with all the gear on board. We are probably shaving with the rudders and the Southbends.

My ship was the USS Franklin D Roosevelt CVA42, had a full machine shop and was always busy. I found a brass 5"x54 case from one of our 5" mounts and asked the Chief if one of the machinists could cut it down to make an ash tray for me. No Problem and within minutes it was cut down, cleanup cut done to get the powder fouling out and a bronze bolt where the primer used to be. %0 some odds years and still have it.

Regarding your lathe, nice one and you will find it very useful. However over the years you will find accessories, tooling and other goodies to add to the basics. probably have about 4 different live centers, only God knows how many sets of drill bits, cutters, unground and ground tool bits and the list goes on. my 7 drawer Kennedy tool box hasn't moved form it's place in years. It's that heavy. the overflow in another tool box. And forget about precision measuring instruments they seem to multiply by themselves. Have fun with your new toy. Frank
