Non-pc 308 in semi??

Hey gang,

Anyone have success with non PC'd cast in something like an AR10 platform?

Looking at the "cast in a garand" method... using a heavy for weight, with a medium to slow burn rate (4895 to 4831) powder, to function reliably. Thoughts? Has anyone here tried or had success?

Thanks!
Andy

I did extensive testing on conventionally lubed cast in a Armalite AR-10 carbine.

Good feedback!

Anything new to report? Any favorite moulds which are still working for you?

Haven't worked with it since then. Moved on to greener pastures. Like cast in a 338WM. Trying to develop a whitetail deer load that gives me the same accuracy at 80 degrees and at realistic hunting temperatures like fifty degrees to zero degrees. Harder than you might expect. I think I'm on to something by switching to magnum primers. Jury still out. I'm doing all my testing after hunting season is over. In Arkansas, bow season opens tomorrow and closes on February 28th.

The limiting factor for my Armalite is that it only feeds spitzers, with 100% reliability. I won't use a semi auto as a single shot. All loads have to be able to 100% reliably cycle the action.............that calls for slower powders than one would normally select.

don't have an AR-10, but that approach works in the M-14 just fine without going to the heavy end of bullet weights.

So, do you think an RCBS 30-180, with some 3031 or 4895 powder would work the action just fine? Need to do some casting this weekend! =)

if the OAL isn't too much for the mag, and the nose isn't too big.
the springs gotta slide the nose into place without too much resistance.

other than that no problems till you start working the ejection versus group size thing.
which is pretty much everyday problems for most bullet casters.

All I've used in my LR-308s are PC'd bullets but shot plenty of lubed, gas-checked bullets through my M1A. The trick is a pointy nosed bullet. Try the NOE 30 Hunter or the MP 30 Silhouette bullet sized to about .310" and launched with something in the like 3031, 4320, or 4895. Be sure your primers are seated below flush.

the 165-A slips home in my Norinco like a glove.
i really wanted to try it or the XCB coated but i haven't even got around to trying them in a bolt gun just yet.

I had the privilege to running 20 rounds through Bruce B's M1A some years back at NCBS. IIRC, it used Lyman #311467 run at about 2000-2100 FPS and IME got complete reliability--gentle but complete extraction, ejection, and feeding.

25 grs of 3031 with a Lee C309150F ran my AR15 7.62x39 like a champ. Sized .309” with Lee L A lube. Accurate and not too dirty.
And that bullet will hunt as well.
