He doesn't cast or even shoot cast bullets in his rifles very much.

The rifle has a $900 Leupold scope on it.
It would take a chuck of change to buy this one from him , but you have to wonder just what that rifle could do with cast bullets ? ?

True........if I had the funds, I'd like to try this one.
It has a Kreiger barrel. He has only shot it about 50 times.

Ben,he more than likely has good "bench manners".

Just sayin, same gun..same load shot by someone twisting and turning off the rest, probably won't exhibit those results.

Sort of irrespective of the rest itself.I was shooting off our "heavy" rest the last cpl days,...usually shoot hunting rigs off Bud's bags...and the recoil management is glaringly obvious.

So,the advice from moms about manners and politeness surely do extend to the shooting disciplines,

Gotta like a nice longer brrl though.

Oh,with sincerest apologies for the thread drift....got an appointment with Clay Spencer.Hoping he can get onboard with setting up a cast barrel for me.

Little sidetrack location wise....maybe 20 minutes out of the way...tax write off...on a job we have going on in Richmond.

Got a '68 ADL .243 with a '69 Weaver(first year)3-9 adj objective...got it from adear friend who between him and I,we pretty much slaughtered varmints with it for too long.

So,depending on input from Mr Spencer,a nice long'ish SS fluted brrl may be in the works. We'll build the stock here.

We're in the mnts of Va.

Don't care who you are or how you slice it. Three in one ragged hole at 125 yards is doin' somethin'.

Not to drift..but I am going to try my PB 299 in my 308....and then the "big one "..the 290...not sure it will stablize. ..

He is a pretty good shot !
Of course, having a $2,000.00 rifle and scope combination doesn't hurt anything either.

The 290' is one of my all time favorites in the 30-06.
I have not shot it nearly as much in my 308 Win. rifles, but I have a Ruger Stainless # 1 in 308 Win., in that rifle the 290' is a nail driver.

That's why many of us don't buy into the tripe of custom, .30-caliber barrels with 14 or 16" twist rates. One-in-ten exists for a reason.

No it doesn't hurt to haveca $2000.00 rifle but then again i was with my shooting buddies..AKA.."the match guys"..

O ne newer guy to cast bullet shooting brought his M1 Garand...his load was the Lee 309..170 gr..rolled in Alox..pushed by 32 grs of 2520..his first 5 shot groups was about three inches and not where he thought it should be on target..

He asked one of the guys I have shot against for the last 30 yrs to give it a try..

Wouldn't you know ..his first four were touching with the 5 out a quarter....

This was out of a cobbled together M1...range scrap lead...tumble lubed..bullet from a Lee mold....

A good shooter is a good shooter...BTW.. the target was a 3.5 " -4"or so shoot and see at 100 yds ..iron sights...

Never got better than third place with these guys around...but boy they can keep you sharp...

Ian ..I am just starting to appreciate the relationship between twist rates , bullet designs and velocity...there is a whole new world out there .. (for me)

OK, if we are looking at bragging groups..... first, I have to say that I
have never made a group that small, Ben. Ever. Impressive.

RemHB-group_nonames.jpg

This was fired by a young friend who I have been teaching to shoot since he was 5, starting with BB guns. He
is going to the USMC soon and wanted to do some long range shooting. So, I got out my Rem 700 HB and
made up some loads which had done well for me. I get Sierra seconds at the factory for
about 2/3 of retail, a perk of living near Sedalia. They seem to shoot about as good as the
"best" bullets - I shoot both, and can't see any significant difference in results.

The info is all on the note. I make it at 0.68 center to center with a dial caliper. I took the names off of the note, no need to have that info all over the net.
