Overdue Introduction

I signed up some time ago so I could see the attached photos. Didn't have a lot to contribute that someone else hadn't already said or done better, so I never planned on posting. A few times now, I've had something to add which I thought might help and now I have a question of my own to post, but before I do that, I felt I should introduce myself.

I've been a hunter, shooter, caster, handloader, etc. for over 45 years now and still don't have it all figured out.
I've learned about a lot of things that don't work most of the time but occasionally will, and once in a while for no apparent reason. I accept that and run with it.
Most of what I've learned came the hard way - trying what I read in books and magazines and learning what not to do the next time.
The stuff that worked came by trial and error and ignoring a lot of "wisdom" which had come my way over the years.
I prefer cast bullets over jacketed for the most part, but if someone parked a truckload of Hornady 6.5mm 160 grain round noses in my drive and forgot them, I'd not be too proud to use them.
I'm not crazy about fiddlin' with gas checks but I'll make and use them when I must.
I have a...... "disorder" that compels me to find ways to shoot without spending money.
I know that "free" bullets from wheel weights are just like "free" fire wood - neither is, but piles of either are a gratifyingly beautiful things.
I use quotation marks around the word alloy when referring to my own "alloy" because it's never a completely certain thing but I'm not throwing it out.

I see a lot of familiar handles here - a lot of people I paid attention to on other forums. It's good to see those names and this site seems to be holding its own against the dilution of manners and honorable behavior.

If I may invite myself,.. If a couple fellas wouldn't mind scootching over on the bench a bit, I don't take up much room.

Fine post indeed Jeff. I think we all learned the hard way over the years by what didn't work, too many variables to have it all figured out.

So what is this question that you have?

Jeff it was people like you on the web that made this all a lot easier for me and many other younger-ish people to figure out and build on, so thanks for making all the mistakes so we didn't have to. And welcome aboard.

Scoooch over a bit? Heck man, we will give you your own!

We all have so much to learn still. Sharing our experiences only makes it easier.

Thank you all. That's the warmest welcome I've seen anywhere. I appreciate the attitude and atmosphere here.

Rick, I should probably post my question in "rifles" or "gunsmithing" but since you asked, I want to add regular "iron" sights to a Contender cabine with a .812" (no taper) MGM barrel and wanted to try to order all the parts ONCE and at the same time.

If anyone has a Contender and can tell me the dimension between the center of a Williams FP or 5D peep aperture bore and the top or center of the barrel, it would be a big help in determining the base and front sight height combination.

Williams also has a "Shorty Shotgun" base in three heights that fits .815" diameter barrels and I can shim or epoxy it to fit the .812" MGM barrel for a pretty decent fit. Skinner has a patridge style front sight in different heights that suits my eyes (and bifocals) and I need to come up with an appropriate sum for the two parts height when put together.

Jeff, you will quickly learn that any question can be asked anywhere because the answer may be 3 pages deep in thread drift.

did someone call for some thread drift?

you might have to get 2 people together on this one.
one with the sight/s and one with the barrel.

The thread drift here has always seems to go in an interesting direction. I'll watch and wait and if I don't learn what I was seeking, I'm bound to learn something else anyway.:)

.....................So Jeff, whilst waiting for the 6.5's to show up,got any CB varmint rigs?......

No real varmint rigs specifically. Mine are all pretty general purpose - intentionally. I have a CZ 527 222 American that I've messed with a bit but not enough to see what it will do past 50 yards.

I generally see varmints at between ten feet and fifty yards or 600 yards to 1,000 yards. I don't even try on the latter.

I cheat and keep a 223 Contender Carbine in the mud room for longer shots (300 yards for me). I can see for over a mile in most directions and I like the way the fast JHPs destroy themselves instead of marching on to find another hole to make in something else. Closer to the house, I keep a 357 Mag carbine (cast-only) for varmints, pests and predators.

That 223, a 6.5x55 and a 257 Roberts are the only guns I kept that shoot jacketed bullets, but I will cast for the Swede and Roberts eventually.

And thanks again to all for such a warm welcome!
