Pistol cartridge bolt gun

Ok now I have you .... :)

This is actually a thread about a rifle cartridge that originated in a pistol that I'm having a rifle assembled to shoot . Or something like that....

I've read a hand full of threads scattered far and thin that the 460 Smith and Wesson can be a real romper stomper in a 16-18" closed breach firearm . These seem to be typically done on Contender and Handy type rifles . I recently found the 45 Raptor . It is just a rimless 460 in a blown straight 308 case intended for the AR 10 platform .

Having a yen for a 45 cal all purpose ,and yenning for such a beast for several years ,like a decade , now seems like the perfect time for a new custom rifle .

I have a 1908 Oviedo SR with a really ugly bbl , all 29" of it, in 7*57 . It shoots factory ammo to about 12" and a couple of select hand loads to 3-4 and I got it out of a salvage bucket on its way to the crusher . The Boyd's prairie hunter stock was $60 and it has a decent trigger . The bbl should be on hand pretty quick and is in theory a "drop in" Sporter which means I'll have to move some stock wood but it should be minimal . I will mark it as a 45-60 Straight Rimless so as to remind myself and a future owner not to really lay the fire to it ...... I noted there is some 460 data that runs well into the low 50 kpsi range . I think that a 350 loafing along at nominal 45-70 16-1700 fps should knock most critters in North America outta their socks . Being a true rifle base too long for the cartridge I'll have lots of OAL to play with and should I feel the need for destruction of targets or myself those 500+ gr thrashers will fit . Those collar buttons ought to be able to be pushed pretty fast . I have 4 moulds to get started with 5 if you count the 454 RB .

I know there is a question to be asked here somewhere .
I have a 452-255 RF , 454424 , 457-340 RF and a PP 429421 that drops .448 . The bbl is ,knock on wood ,.452 so that would make pistol bullets the preferred but undersized or patched rifle bullets are on deck as well . I forgot about the 45-200 SWC RCBS.

Any suggestions for bullet of choice in a smokeless low pressure 45 cal rifle/pistol/rifle cartridge ?
Powder suggestions for the rifle beast to keep it in the under 30k regions .

As always this is a hunting tool first and fun/business second .

I would look hard at the lee 452-300-RF, plenty for a .451 barrel and should get you in the 1800-2000 fps range.

A plywood trough, forearm length, converts the round to sq shape needed for either milling machine or shaper for stock/brrl work.We just use a big honkin core bx,two wing router "bit",colleted in a vert mill.

You can thread the trough sides using std thread inserts, takes longer to write than to do.Then, pad blocks on stock.Three sided "cats head".

In our case,we lock the fixture, then set taper with the bolts coming through the sides. You count the turns from center,to get the taper, match that on the other side.

I think the profile is narrow enough I will be able to get it in just a few minutes with the scrapers . If memory serves , the last 4" and the first step are all that will need attention . The parts should arrive today or tomorrow morning and then I'll know for sure .

We also, run a stock fitter's pin through action holes. Then you are just adjusting two screws at the Fr of fixture.

Interesting,is how we mount stocks through those same action holes....to a very well engineered 4axis fixture for the finishing dept. It's a action sized sled, round and threaded for as many actions as can be spaced.

Have fun, sounds like a great build.

I hope the twist is fast enough to stabilize 405 gr bullets. A 405 at 1300 is really effective,
and at 1600-1700 will handily stop anything you need to stop. Lighter weight for plinking
and whitetails and such "small game".

The 16" twist should do . Funny how deep a .005 groove looks in a .257 or .308 and how shallow it looks in a .452 .
