Plain base 311041

This one is a Lyman 311041 that has been " flat topped " enough to remove the g/c shank and render a nice plain base design of lesser weight than the original.

I have no idea what these will weigh ( any of you want to make a guess ? ? ).

The work that was done was done by a pretty good machinist.
Only problem is there was no locking screw for the sprue bolt.
That's fine, I took care of that here in my shop.
It also appears to me that the machinist made a completely new sprue plate. The plate is thicker and heavier than the original.

I thought that this cast bullet might make a nice plinking round in the 30-30 at around 1050 - 1100 fps.

Tell me what you think ?

I came around on the back side of the mould blocks and D & T'd a hole
for a locking screw for the sprue bolt.

The lock screw ( 10 - 24 ) is in place now.

My thought is "155-grain tack driver". Nice score there, Ben, the modifications look to be very well done.

Well, way too long of non-bore-riding nose, but if you keep it slow enough it may shoot OK. It is so much better to just cut out the gas check shank. Keep us up to date! Always curious.

Had I have been doing this one I'd have simply drilled out the g/c shank.

Looks to me that it's missing more than the check shank, it's probably missing the shank, base band, and the next lube groove. I imagine that being a middle driving band originally is why the current base band is so narrow. If that little 1/8" part of the nose right in front of the front band snuggles the bore it ought to shoot just fine at PB velocities....IF.

well they shortened it up for a reason.
300 savage?
32-20/30 carbine TC barrel?
might not be too bad in a fast twist 300 BO rifle.

Well, regardless, nobody asked you why you bought it, so I reckon we all "get it" :). If the nose doesn't cast big enough for you or it doesn't work out, I may be interested in it for powder coating.

Why did you buy it? Because Ben can't resist a new mould, duh.

Looks like someone did some good work on the modification.

Ben, send those guys some bullets. Let them get addicted to the mould then make a killing on the auction. I see another new rifle in your future!:)

Will be interesting ( today ) to see what the nose mikes.
That may very well " Tell the Tale " on this one.

I'm guessing 150ish. I have 145, 150 & 170 of similar design PB that shoot good @ > 1500 from BO, 30/30 & testing 308W. That measly base band will probably restrict to the lower fps like you usually shoot.
