Plain base Lyman 311466

For you Guy Loverin fans....................
Recently, I took a 2 cavity, Lyman 311466, Loverin .30 cal. mould and removed both g/c shanks, rendering the mould to produce a pair of plain base bullets on each cast.

I checked the accuracy of my work with a scale.
The front bullet weighed 162.1 grains
The rear, weighed 162.2 grains.
I was afraid to tamper with the mould after that.
You know, ........leave well enough alone !
If it isn't broke, don't be trying to fix it.

My grandson ,Trevor, age 9, is going through a lot of .30 cal. cast bullets shooting groups at the 50 yard line.
He really enjoys " Low Node " .30 cal. shooting.

I picked a random load with the Lyman 311466 plain base bullet recently to test in my Rem. 788, 30-30. This load may offer some promise ? ?

My grandson Trevor loves to shoot these types of loads.

That is promising indeed! I have only one Lovereign-type mold, the NOE- version of the 311465. I have only just started load development, going to shoot it tomorrow. Looking forward to that.
That box of nice bullets will provide a lot of joy for you and Trevor. Happy shooting!

Nice shooting.
You sure are working hard to put the check makers out of business!

I feel it is impt. for me to do my part !!!!!!:)
Some pretty cheap shooting.
I neck size only with loads like this.
Brass will last a very long time with mild loads like you see above.

Ben thread drift. In the past it has been stated that the Loverns have a velocity threshold. Could you comment on the subject.

Kevin,

Not really, I have never been one to take cast rifle bullets and see just how fast I can shoot them. I realize that many do this type of experimentation and seem to enjoy their work.

I have a tendency to establish a nice, reliable, accurate load with a cast rifle bullet and stick with that load. For me , the enjoyment is in the accuracy potential of a load, not a velocity threshold that I was able to obtain.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
I've never tried to take a Loverin up to Warp 9 either, but people who have often talk about having to use only a few of the lube grooves for lube. I always liked the idea Guy Loverin came up with, but they haven't been top class for me in my rifles so far. Probably the nut behind the wheel is most of the problem!

I don't want my comments above to come across as negative.
I know that we all benefit from those that " push the limits" in lube innovations and bullet design. We have new bullet designs and new bullet lube today that allow cast bullet shooters to move into jacketed bullet velocity zones with good accuracy. Many had to do a lot of experimenting to gain the knowledge to allow this to happen.

As for me, I guess I'm more of the old & slow type.
My plain base bullets ( which certainly have velocity limits ) and I seem to get along just fine. It is enjoyable for me. I guess that is what it is all about.

I have a 4 cavity Walt Melander mold cut for the 446.
if it has a speed limit in my 340-A I didn't find it before finding the pressure limit.
those same loads shoot in the Lever guns quite well also but at a different OAL, I'm not big on loading the same bullet to different lengths for different rifles because I know what will 100% happen there.

I can't remember trying it in any of my other 30 cal guns right off hand.
but it was moving along above jacketed speeds in the 30-30 no problem.
