Pure Lead

With my pot empty yesterday I inserted a few ingots of pure. After preheating the mould I cast several Lee 45-230-TC bullets for firelapping. I was surprised how well they filled. Here's a couple pictures for comparison.

Pure will cast well if the melt and mould are hot enough. Those will be perfect for firelapping.

I think our friend Creeker might have cast a bullet or two once upon a time.....

Heat is REALLY your friend when casting pure lead. Remove the "REALLY" when dealing with binary or tertiary alloys. YMMV.

I have that same mold in a 6 banger and it casts beautifully. Although, I cast with a 50/50 alloy.

I am very fond of the Lee TC autopistol bullet designs--9mm, 10mm/40, and 45 are all on hand here. All three get seated with .020" of front drive band exposed above the case mouth--are given a mild taper crimp--and feed like water down a drainpipe in my centerfire stutterpistols. Bullet design is something Lee can get get right on occasion, though quality control on the tools using their designs can be uneven.
