My friend Jason and I went to the range today.
I got to shoot my new Rem., Model 788, 308 Win.
He shot several of his 1903 Springfields.
He also shot his MauserField ( A 98 Mauser Action with Small Ring Threads ) with a Springfield , Military 2 groove barrel, chambered in 30-06 Springfield. It is a cast bullet shooter !

We are fortunate to have a shooting shed where everything is stored under lock and key. So very convenient to pull up, park the truck, get everything out of the storage shed and start shooting !

Here is the group that I shot at 50 yards with my Remington Model 788, 308 Win.
It was my 1st day out with the rifle. I had no idea what to load for the rifle ? ?

This target was shot with 17.5 grains of 2400.

Dang nice shooting Ben!

That looks like a great set up you have!!
I am jealous :)

It was in the hundreds here over the weekend and shooting did not sound fun!

We had about a 5 mph breeze.
Not enough to harm shooting, but with the tarp over us and a soft breeze we made it fine.

We shot for 4 hours.

Thanks,

Ben

Me too Ben....but with numbers like you guys get ..100+ ..I am afraid I would be more of a burden...than a full participant. ...

I am always cussing the wind here...but it keeps the temps down...if we loose the wind we can always go off shore to cooler temps and do a little fishin'

Back on topic ..must be nice to see your work spread out on the bench...

4 hours? I think of 2 hours as a long trip.
I will suffer thru the heat tomorrow and go for 2 hours depending on how the lead collection goes.

Heck Ben I can barely shoot groups like that sitting under under a rainbow.
Let alone when it's 100...
I am very jealous!
Especially with guns that look as nice as yours!

100?
as in temperature?

I melt before the lube in the cartridges do at that temp.
I was in Oklahoma last year about this time and couldn't make it to work 2 day's in a row the whole 2 weeks I was down there.

Well Ben, looks like you have another very accurate rifle. Jason's is too.
You evidently did a stellar job on the bedding and the stock looks great to me.

I'm jealous of the tarp...i need to invest in one like that.

I like that 788! I've got one in 223, always wanted a 308. That gun store in Hsv has one but they want a lot $$ for it.

Well Ben,
I didn't expect less from that rifle on your first trip out! When you rework a stock you turn any rifle into a Great rifle!
Great shooting. Hey I like your friends Springfield Mauser nice concept!
I'm here casting away since, now they closed the enter range! But I still go up early, before the workforce gets there and pick lead on the berms.
As least I will be ready when it re opens in 2 months

Good shooting, Ben.

100°F? That's hot, even if the humidity is relatively low, I won't lie, but at the same time I'm used to it. When rifles and ammo sitting on a bench in the sun can exceed 160°F from a 15-minute soak, it's hot. I tend to stay inside when it's over 105, particularly if the humidity is over about 60-70%. But if I didn't tough it out, there would be about four months a year I couldn't shoot. Ever wear a sweatband at the range?

I just got home from 2 1/4 hours at the range. No shade, temps pushing 85°. Humidity around 65%.
Got home and looked online at weather channel. We are hotter than Ian today, not a good thing at all.

I could have been done much quicker but the berms were given up lead well and I brought home 60+ pounds.

We've been unseasonably wet, humid, moldy, and cool here. The last round of storms really dropped the temps down, been about 10-20 below normal for the past two weeks. Yesterday was starting to get a little bit warmish, but today, not so much. If I were picking bullets against a wind-sheltered berm in summer heat, I'd be using a parasol.
