Rem 700 VS .308 Range Report

Well it is finally seeing it my way (with support from you guys)..nothing like ganging up on something to solve problems...

I have been getting fairly decent results from the rifle, but not what I was hoping for...until today and yesterday..

I did my research on the .308, it's likes and dislikes with cast bullets.....I got my brass straightened out,
and OAL's sort of there...

As I said it was a real tease at first...good groups, ho-hum groups, nothing consistent....then JW mentioned that he tightened the screws on his rifle just to make sure they weren't the problem.

I had been meaning to check mine...this morning I did..the front trigger guard screw went in about 3/4 turn the rear about a half... then of to the range...

I set up as usual and this time I tried leaving both eyes open...scope set on 16x....very interesting..seemed to
cut down the eye strain.....nice....

The results....100yds

I shot the last groups timed because the wind and rain were coming in off the Ocean and down my neck....:mad:

Dan,
Wow that is a big improvement! Guess it could have been those receiver screws!
Nice shooting! I take it that was at 100 yds?
Very nice

Now that I have a base line for 200 gr bullets in the 700 I will be trying those Egan's you sent......
just way too much fun guys.....:):):):):):)

Of course there was a know it all looking over my shoulder, he asked what the 700 was I told him a Varmint Special.

His reply was , well a .308 was not much of a varmint gun, I explained about the difference in. 308 Win twist rates..
that did not impress him...I then told him to come back when I was done...he did and as he was looking over my targets as I said " I think a good size grasshopper would be in serious trouble at 100 yds"....
love getting even...;)

PS ..cast bullets to boot...

Those fliers I discovered happen when I move my entire hand back to pull the trigger instead of squeezing the trigger....bad habit I picked up some how...

Dan,
I caught myself doing that this past weekend too! I'm starting to notice a lot of little "bad" things I have been doing

Dan,

I'm certain that you already know this, but you'll never impress anyone that already knows EVERYTHING !:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

When you can put 4 rounds in 7/16 " @ 100 yards with cast bullets , you got to be doing a whole lot of things right !

Ben....what do know those guys brush off anything that MIGHT prove them wrong as abnormalities. ...their loss....

As for doing a lot of things right ..I am just so dang happy to do anything right...even if I don't know what I am doing....hence my inability to explain things.....sorry guys....

Dan,

My preacher told a good one today.

He said.....

" A hobo and another fellow were talking one day. The fellow ask the Hobo , when you're crossing the country and come to a crossroads, how do you know which road to take ? "

" The hobo replied, I toss up some dirt in the air. Wherever the dirt lands, that's the road I take." Sometimes I have to throw the dirt up in the air 6 times to get it to land in the right road."

those guys brush off anything that MIGHT prove them wrong as abnormalities. ...their loss....

Being " pre opinionated " carries a price when it comes to learning.

Sure do agree with Ben's comment on "pre opinionated" PIA's. I get mad at myself when I have to annotate that one out of the group, and have to lable it me. Goes with the terrority I guess. Great shooting Dan!

Dan....try not wrapping your thumb around the top of the pistol grip. Lay it along the side of the stock, pointed straight downrange. This may help cure your whole hand moving issues because it will make you acutely aware of any movement of your firing hand besides the trigger finger when firing. Sort of pinch the pistol grip lightly between the meaty base part of your thumb and your last three fingers.

Actually Paul I wish you were there....the group with the 466 got me talking out loud to myself...I got the first two touching..ok looks good then the third, no increase in group size...rats I am now off the paper.....fourth round ditto, I am going to have to check the backer to see where these dang things are going..might as well shoot the fifth so I can find them....oh it looks different now!.....good thing no one was shooting next to me.....Now I wish I had concentrated on the fifth round more......that's the one out to the right

Next trip out I am going to reintroduce myself to that method...always used it when I shot my levers with tang sights.....thanks

I have to watch the action screws on my encore like that. I have the flex-tech synthetic stock and after a good bit of shooting they'll back off just a bit and that's all it takes to open the groups up.
I've had rem. rifles in the past that actually liked the rear screw 1/4 turn off jam tight, but never both screws.

Good find and good shooting!

how is anybody using a 314299 in a 30 cal rifle.
they spec out to 314 x 304/305.
the 311299 is supposed to be 311x300/301.
I keep hearing of people using the 31 cal version in their 30 cal rifles and don't understand how.
I use the 314299 in my argie rifles sized to 313.
