Quicksilver those groups have me envious and I hope to get 1/2 as close to those with the 315.
I have a Lyman 450 on the way and will learn to use it and get back to testing soon.
Had 2 brothers pass away 9 days apart a couple weeks ago and haven't had much ambition to shoot, Steve

Fiver: You know how. Modern Lyman. I have a new 311-299 and it casts .296x.307, WITH WW+2%TIN. Should have ordered a .31 cal and it MIGHT make .300x.310".

Dan: I have a nice scar on top of another scar on my thumb knuckle, took two different range sessions to finally break me of wrapping my thumb behind that tang sight base when touching off a drop-tubed 90-grain case full of 3F behind a 535-grain bullet!

I just read about some guy named Larry winning some shooting thingy in Arizona using the 314299 in his 'old' Moisin with a scope on it.
he did use 5/5/90 alloy to get it to pour out to his rifles specifications.
read it was a new Lyman mold too.
you could pull his load out of the air I'm sure, but the group was pretty darn good.

how is anybody using a 314299 in a 30 cal rifle.
they spec out to 314 x 304/305.
the 311299 is supposed to be 311x300/301.
I keep hearing of people using the 31 cal version in their 30 cal rifles and don't understand how.
I use the 314299 in my argie rifles sized to 313.

Fiver...this much I can tell you....In my quest for the perfect 299 I ended up with four molds,
The first one I have had for about 35 yrs ,an original single cavity Lyman 311299 ...it drops a 314x301 bullet with 91/4/4 alloy

I have a NOE 311299 double that drops 312x301

I have a NOE 312299 that drops a 313x302

And I have a NOE 314299 Gc PB that drops a 314x304...

I use the 314 with the 304 nose sized 311 in
my 03's with about the sam results I posted here and I used the Lyman with the 301 nose sized 310 in the 700.

The perfect 299 for me would be a 311 0r 312 with a 302 nose.

Maybe some day if I find one I will ad it to my collection. ..right now I got two that work..

I've used SAECO #305 in my Win 94 30-30. Casts at .313" with a nose of .302" with my alloy. Works well sized .002" or a bit less but I have RCBS molds that Erik opened the driving bands up that is more accurate.

This particular Winchester has a really nice bore except for that pesky .310" groove diameter.

Steve,
You have endured a loss that is difficult to bear and then compounded by another almost on top of the last. You have my deepest sympathy and condolence for such a loss in your family. My very best to you and your family.

well he has 4-314299 err 311 umm 312 molds.
I woulda quit at one, actually I did quit at one.
mine makes 304 on the nose and just over 313 on the body with ww alloy.

not only did I read it, I got about 15 blow by blow PM's about the whole thing.
the rifle is not what it seems at first glance.
moisin leads everyone down the path of thinking 313 type barrel diameters but this ain't necessarily so.

the Finn's got ahold of a stockpile of these rifles and went Carl Gustafson on them.
add in a sneaky Huber 2 stage Match trigger.
and you have an accurate rifle with 308 X 300 barrel dimensions, a gauged to #2 throat, a straight cut minimum tolerance chamber, and a 2.0 lb trigger in pretty much a stock configuration.
get someone to bed and free-float the barrel and it should shoot 1/2-3/4" groups pretty much all day or you wasted about 2 grand.
