i got a remington m14 in 30 rem last year. it has the original sights but my eyes don't do "buckhorns". they will do peep sights. so i set off on my quest to find the peeps. i put in "tang sights for remington model 14". the tang sight goes for $100 - $350 and up. my mouth fell open and i'm sure it was me, but there was a "ack...uhhhhhh...ack" sound. my hopes were dashed at the price tag. i could go $100-$120 with the screws, but i'll be danged to pay $130 or more, danged i tell ya!!!!!
months go by, but i was still looking for m14 peep(tang) sights/screws. then three weeks ago, i found them at an auction. the bid started low($25) and two guys had to have it. when it got to $110 a guy dropped out and the other guy knew he had them, BUT............i already decided on $120 so what the heck, i bid on the tang sight and won.
then i had a really bad head cold and when that went away, then it was my lower back turn.
when that was all done, it was the rem m14 turn!!! it was a easy-peasy job, take off two screws, put the tang sight on and replace the screws........so i thought. i thought wrong. the taking off of the screws is what got me. boy they TIGHT!!!!!! well, it's time to use a little kroil action on them, but first i've to dissemble the rifle. (all it takes is a thumbscrew to take off the stock and the action) i look at the screws and i can see top and bottom of the screws. so i take the kroil to the top of screws and let it soak overnite. the next day, i take the screwdriver to them and the screws are still tight. no big deal, i turn the stock over and the two holes(of the screws) are filled up with kroil and i let them soak overnite again. the next day, i fill up the two holes with kroil and almost instantly the kroil goes thru the screwholes and drips on my rag. so i turn over the stock and begin to screw them out. the first screw was tight but after a little more pressure on my wrist, it "pops" out. i take screwdriver to last screw and after a little more pressure of my wrist, the screw breaks its head!!!!! "AAARRRRGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!" i say(well not really, family channel and all). i would drill it out and take an easy-out tool to deal with it, but i don't want to do it with only arm(the left one). i'm scared of drilling into the threads of the screw(its tiny), so i will take it to my gunsmith to do it.
sometimes, my stroke is a pain in the butt!!!!!
