restock and a rebarrel

When restocking mil surps, why does everyone always go with the modern "sporter" style of stock? Is it because i havent found a modern replacement for a miltiray rifle that actually replicated the original stock, werether enfield, mauser, or nagant?

When rebarrelling, why is it so hard to make "gunsmiths" understand you want to use military profile if possible, or that you will want to put it back to iron sights?

Much easier just to buy an unmodified milsurp. If you haven't profiled a blank to a specification, sweated on ladder sight bases, or machined a front sight base, you have no idea how much work it is or how much the job is worth.

Not to be sarcastic here, but I suspect most commercial stock makers make modern Sporters, because most people want a modern Sporter.
You need to talk to a stock maker (not the gunsmith), if you want something "out" of the Main stream.
Below are three Mausers that my friendly neighborhood stock maker carved up.
The top two are 257 Rob and the bottom one is 358 Win.

Yeah, and I wish I still owned these. except for the 358Win, which is a 1909 Arg Mauser action and it was very fussy about what would cycle from Mag to chamber.

Thats odd.
Usually the big feed issues are from chambering to Belted or rimmed cases. Generally the .473 case head causes no problems.

I like the 1909's and used them for three conversions. I had visions of a fourth in 257 Bob, for my wife. But she preferred the "tender 7/30. So that one remained 7.65 Mauser. It became my Cast Bullet gun.
The other four where 6.5/06, 280 and 35 Whelen. Then I have the first one just a Mauser still in 8mm.

The Mauser's are near and dear!!

thats the stock i like, not this cut down "wonder gun sporter" crap. Id much rather have the enfield no 1 front band / sight system.

ive talked to various websites of "custom stock companies" and they either have no idea of what I am talking about, despite sending them links to online photos of the guns, or just to obtuse or non skilled.

Going on the auction sites has been alarming for me. It seems that a soviet arsenal refurb mosin nagant is now worth a minimum 500$ for a round reciever. And my Hex reciever is worth at least 680-800 depending on how I feel like grading the metal finish.

Really scary prices on things. Looked at enfields and started crying myself to sleep. Albini Braendlins that were "90% or better condition" in 2003 selling for 500$ are now 12-1800. Snyder rifles have gone up 600$ for usable condition ones..
