Siamese 45-70

Guess good as any to start. My current favorite cast shooter. Siamese Mauser converted to 45-70. Had the barrel cut to 17" for a bear/brush gun. No bear this year but bloodied it opening morning on a nice buck. Was pushing a 405grn cast, with 49grns of 3031.

That is a pretty healthy load. The deer never stood a chance.

Nice buck. Nice looking rifle for sure. I've been wanting a Siamese Mauser in 45/70 ever since Ben posted the pics of his.

That's a pretty ultimate bear gun you have there.

Well the good news is that if you really want to whump up some .45-70/458 Winmag loads, the rifle will
be happy long after your shoulder said "UNCLE!".

Neat guns, and insanely strong for a .45-70.

Fantastic...Always good to have another "dangerous gunned" critter shooter about. Nice buck !
That makes my mind wonder if anyone has tried the 50 Alaskan in the Siamese Action ?? Pressure would be OK... Should work !

But far better to have too much than too little.
As time goes by we all learn a bit more about the fine work a cast bullet will do. But ain't no big corn cruncher going to need dogs to get tracked down getting well "thwapped" with that load. And like Brian wrote "No bear this year"....

Yea, that short barrel, synthetic stock, and that load will wake ya up. Im a good bit lower than some loads I ran across with that boolit. 56 was the highest of a couple people. Many in the 52 range. Maybe if I ever go after a cape buffalo.

One of the guys at specialty pistols just had an XP100 pistol built in 45-70. A very interesting thread to say the least. I passed on a 458 American about 15 years ago for the price of an action. Kicked myself ever since.
I have a 45-70 built on an Enfield.

I want an Enfield in 45-70 in the worst way. Harder find than the Siamese for sure.

Really regret buying one of those mausers when they
were dirt cheap. Sort of like I regret not buying a lot
of milsurps when they were cheap.

I hear you on that one Paul.... The Gibsons store in Killeen always had 2 55 gallon "paper Barrels" at the front door full of WW2 Mausers for $19.

I have a Siamese mauser in 450 Alaskan, it works fine, so I don't see why a 50 wouldn't work. I lost interest in it and haven't shot it in quite a while. It has a peep site on it, but the recoil destroyed it within 50 rounds. Probably a good candidate for something like a Skinner sight.

Thanks Tom Good to read from another Alaskan shooter / owner.
Been doing some research and it looks like the first 50 Alaskans were built on Siamese actions. At singleactions.com/50alsaskan4 there is a nice long description how to build one and loads for the lever rifles and the bolt version. The Siamese was tested to 2 grains more 4198 with no issues. Have to add one of those to my project list. Be fun to compare a bolt to the jap 86 50 AK.

Missionary, About 35 years ago, there was a gun shop in (believe it or not- inDC)
that had nail keg barrels full of new Saeco barrels for $10.00. I bought one
heavy barrel in 222, that is still on my 722 Rem. Quite probably my most accurate
rifle. $10.00 was a lot of money back then on Mil pay, or would have bought a
half dozen more.
