The finning can be very real. A small push rod coupled with an oversized bullet can lead to a distinct finning and almost a cupped base. Sizing down more than .003 exacerbates the finning.
 
Glad that someone with more experience than me can confirm my limited observations. That's why I want to make the pushrods fit the die as closely as possible. It also means that if you have some weird size die for your .43 Spanish or something you can be assured that you will get a pushrod that fits and doesn't just barely work.
 
Keith has the dimension right too, go .004-.005 under sizing diameter. Too snug and a little misalignment causes binding. Got the plaque for that one.

I like the simple design Keith came up with for the pushers. The hard part is the base that goes in place of the shell holder.
 
If someone had an older or oddball press that used a different type of shellholder and wanted to dedicate it to push thru sizing I'd be glad to try and come up with an adapter. The base of the pushrods measure .262"-.263" to fit in the 17/64" (.265") hole in the ram adapter.
 
If you try to size more than .003" you're going to get finning regardless. For extreme size reduction, take it in stages and if possible reverse bullet direction each step.

Another tip for the home gamer is turn a concave face on the pushrod while leaving about 1/16" of flat around the perimeter so sprue bumps don't start the bullet crooked.

Package on its way to @oscarflytyer. Hope the USPS gets it to him in a reasonable time. Looking forward to any comments good or bad after he uses it.

The pushrods don't have a concave face - that's a good idea - but they do have a small center drill hole in them so small sprue bumps shouldn't be a problem.
 
Keith: I would like the set as shown in the posting (dia. in .30, 38/357 and 45) (using the nominal sizes is fine) please. In addition, I would like a push rod (and bushing?) for .223 caliber bullets. Please see info re; message. Thanks.​
 
Message coming your way! The smallest guide bushing in the set should handle .22 just fine.
 
*5shot - No reason to upgrade at all. The die holder is just a much simplified version of the Mark I. I couldn't afford to make the original version, too much machining and hand work.
