A few years back I decided I didn't need a 340 Sav, took it to a gun show in Lincoln and
a guy offered me 250 for it. I had paid about 100.00 for it a few years back, and felt
I had made out well. Took the 250, and walked over to a Win dealer, and got a decent
94 for the 250, talking him down from 300 for cash. Now all that said, I like the 94 Win
in 30-30, and have one in 357 with long bbl that I like, but wish I also had the 340 back.
As a matter of fact, wish I had the majority of fire arms I have sold or traded off in the
past. Far to many to list. But like the old Pa Dutch saying goes: "Ve got too soon old-
and too late smart!" I managed to get the getting old part ok, but the getting smart part
I am still working on.

Last winter we bought a 325C Savage with 2 clips (ok I know they're magazines but it says clip right on them) in 30-30 .
Shot several 50 yd groups of 3 shot work ups 3 touching . Paid $200 .
Miss killed a hog with it in May .
I was taken with that fancy looking butter knife bolt.2016-01-16 21.55.17.jpg

Lever gunitis, revolveritis I have never heard of a cure for either.
I messed up bad a couple of years back. Let a buddy talk me out of a new unfired in the box savage 99 in 375WW, never knew they made one $600 OTD. Oh well.
Fast forward to this year. New unfired no box 94 Winchester XTR in 375 came home with me. Passed up a pair years back NIB one a 375 and the other was the 307. The XTR from this year cost me what the asking price for the pair was!!!
Josh, I sure do understand the wants for a lever gun. If you are just wanting a shooter I would look at either a Contender/G2 (sorry there never was a "G1") or the Encore platform. The 30-30 carbine or rifle barrel can be tough to find for either. I would suggest a full custom and look at MGM. May be over budget but a good platform and you can go to handgun length barrels as well.

I'm just wondering; Is there any caliber rifle out there that could be re-chambered to a 30-30 Winchester?

Ruger #1 comes to mind, JW.

My current 30/30 is a gorgeous Marlin 336 from the 1950s, 24" barrel and 2/3 magazine. Came with all-steel Lyman receiver sight, too. Life is good.

I've got two Winchester LA from some years ago. One is a 20" that I have fired very little. It has beautiful wood but right after I bought it I ran into another 26" Oct-Bl "Classic" that has become my good CB shooter.

Anyone have experience with the Savage 170 slide-action rifle? One of those would be pretty neat to have, particularly if you shoot wrong-sided like me (one reason I like leverguns for many jobs outside of punching paper at the range).

170s were built on a shotgun platform and had their share of problems. I've handled them and wasn't favorably impressed.

Send that 99 30-30 off to JES Reboring and turn it into a 35-30 or 38-55.

RBHarter last winter I got a 325 just like yours with the butter knife lever. I am still waiting for the GS to get done drilling the front band on the action so I can mount a Red Dot sight scout scope fashion.
Just to turn the knife a little. Last fall I was at a gun auction. I passed on a 340 (nothing special) that went for 185$ I already had 2 of them. Later the same day I got a Handy 30/30 20 gau. combo for 190$

25-35 Winchester and 219 Zipper. Parent case was 30-30.

Model 64 Winchester could be had chambered for any of those three, plus 32 Winchester Special.

Rotary magazine is very much limited to exactly what it was made for. Also, the pencil barrel won't bore. What I'd really like is to have a new barrel screwed on it that was chambered for 7x30 Waters, but the '99 is so gawdawful ugly I'm not sure I'll ever spend the money to make that happen.
