SO... there is this rifle...

The old masters reworked the whole rifle, and usually trashed the factory barrels too. Then, after all the modifications, and all the stock work, they would refinish and blue the entire rifle. There is no reason one could not barrel a Savage 110 in the conventional manner. Frankly I wouldn't want to. The advantages of that system outweigh the aesthetics for me. Us lefties appreciate the Savage bolts. Yes they are relatively cheap economy guns, but they are available left handed and usually outshoot any of the more recognized rifle brands.

Speaking of heresy: I have never understood the aura of the Winchester Model 70. I will concede they have an effective, simple and crisp trigger system, the dubious advantage of controlled feed (the originals anyway), and some models were very pretty, but all in all they are overweight and less accurate than their competition. Perhaps a bit like their number one proponent Jack O'Connor, while an excellent writer, he was by all accounts a bit of a leach and a drunken boor.
But the man could tell a tale and put a youngster right there in the Sonoran Desert, or the Yukon.

I always assumed I would grow up and shoot a desert Big Horn. By now if I get a shot at a Big Horn it will be at our local Dodge dealer's.

You can still hunt the north rim of the Grand Canyon if you get one of the out of state permits (odds one in 10,000).

I’m with Oscarflytier. Just got back a Howa SS short action barreled action from Jess Boring in Oregon. Took the rifle in trade at a Gunshow. Almost refused the deal, as it was 243 Win. But good sense prevailed, and realized it would be a GREAT doner rifle for a 358 Win. It’s ready for sight in when it quits snaining outside.

Looks like I snoozed too long. Yesterday the rifle was behind the counter with a hold tag on it.
Ill check again in a few days.

CW, don’t despair.. any 243, 7-08 or 308 in any action that you fancy can be punched out and rebored by Jess. $250 for a blued barrel, and $275 for stainless. Three groove rifling at that price. I sent along a dummy cartridge with my rcbs 35-200 bullet sized .359 powder coated installed and he throated the bbl for that bullet. This morning will tell the tail..gonna shoot it

No experience with the Axis series, but I have yet to fire an inaccurate Savage bolt rifle. "Being ugly" has done no harm to Glock pistols or most new-pattern fighting rifles (AR-15, HK-91/93, FN-FAL, etc.).

Every 243 I have ever owned has been an accurate rifle, as well. All were bolters, and all gave up nothing in the accuracy department to castings over j-words.

This was my first Axis and my first "large frame" Savage Bolt. Bought on a whim cause it was offered at a price I could nit refuse. ;).
What a rifle!! I took it appart, checked bedding. Factory its pillar bedded a d its bedding is better then most I have seen. ZERO movement I WAS IMPRESSED! I removed the bases and replaced them with Leupold dual dovetail bases. Holes & screws cleaned Red loc tited bases. Then rings a d the "factory" Weaver 3-9 scope.
I loaded up a box of 150 Match bullets cause I had a box with twenty bullets. The. A second box with 120 VMAX bullets and a different powder. At the range, BOTH these loads shot TOUCHING @ 100 yards... A few months later, I loaded a 120 Nosler and H335 not a hot loading, maybe 2500 fps. Lower recoil for my wife. I checked it @ 50 and it put about ten shots i to one 1/2" hole... BORINGLY accurate!!!
But the stock is flexy in the forestock and its muddy girl hot pink n black camo... Pluss its like. 12" LOP. SO IT DESERVES, a nice stock!

I've had 7 Savages , a 325 ,a 340 , 2 110s ,an Axis , and a Stevens 200 . Also a 620 shotgun . The 300s , 200 and the 308 110E were simply boring . Grab a hand full of whatever shoot groups usually under 1.5" . Then there was the other 110 it was just pure weird .

I also have a 340 and a couple '99's But everything else is the smaller 23's and 93's.

The Axis series are just a cheap gun that works.

Not unlike the Ruger Americans.

The beauty of the Axis is the beauty of the 10/110 . It's an anymans gun that can be in almost any cartridge you want as long as it's under 4" 222 , Mauser , beltless or belted mag based you can have any of them in just 4 actions . Add a 5th spring for a speciality bolt head and you've added x39 , 35 Rem , 6.8 and if desired either the old Rem or simply rimless versions of the 30-30 clan and Herrett s . The mags may or may not need to be altered and there is a bottom metal set to accommodate AR mags . The 2 wrenches and barrel vise jaws are all you need in specialty tools with a designated factory case or HS gauge .
It would take I think a special individual to fail at swapping barrels . There's about a dozen stocks and only 4-5 I think variations on the action . Not bad for a design going on 60 yr of production .
