Not wanting to pollute Ben's post on adding a red dot ...

Should a lever have a scope???
Ha yup I said it!!

I was always A NO, HECK, NO Kinda guy!!!!

I do like peeps. Weather a receiver or tang peeps where acceptable.
Then I turned 40... Eyes started to decline and I added a scope on QR base/rings and then another lever got a scope cause I couldnt see the sites.
Couple years ago I picked up a Browning 92 its got traditional Winchester 1892 carbine sites. Tiny front site blade. I absolutely could not see! This one could not be changed either. I searched and located a very clean base for a reflex that nicely fit the rear site dovetail. Made by Doug Turnbull. No it wasn't a million dollars either!! It was about 70$ and fits a reflex site.

Today another lever got a optic. These eyes are approaching 60 and seeing sites are more and more difficult...

So where do you stand?

We are all individuals and live in a fairly free society.

That said, despite my vision not being all that compatible with iron sights, I will not bastardize my lever rifles by putting scopes or dots on any of them.

I am a retro-grouch according to my children. I prefer late adopter.

I have always used aperture sights on most of my rifles. Retinal tears and cataract surgery with distance only implants have changed my vision. Scopes work pretty well, apertures in good light too. Open sights on pistols are a problem. I tried reflex red-dots on several pistols and that works well. Easy to try on a rifle so I did. Just about as good as apertures except for really precise aiming, such as for smallbore prone.

No lightning struck when I put a red-dot on a Single Six, so I felt pretty safe to put one on a lever gun.

Finding the dot is easier on a rifle than a pistol. Cheek on stock lines things up well. Being able to adjust the brightness tunes the dot for the sharpest image given the light conditions. 3 MOA for the rifles, 6 MOA for pistols.

For me this has kept shooting enjoyable and lets me make the best use of my vision.

Depends.

For general range use I like a rear peep and a front bead. At 57 I can still shoot them well enough. For hunting a scope starts to make sense- low light is an issue.

I do fall into the whatever it take to keep shooting crowd. Far better to put optics on the rifle than to stop shooting it. If others are offended then it certainly sucks to be them.

well, i'd used to say no, heck no!!! but my eyes ain't what they used to be, so i'd say yes to a reflex sight. back when i started to get fuzzy deer in my open sights, i did two things. 1. go to an eye doctor. 2, put on a Williams FP aperture sight on my m 94.

on another site, a guy put on green dot reflex sight on his Remington m14. i luv it!!!

Whatever it takes to bring home the bacon. Have optics on almost all my long guns. Mostly, in QD lever rings for versatility............. use a conventional scope for load development, switch to a red dot for close work. Optics on most handguns, unless they are carry pieces. However, those wear Crimson Trace Lasergrips or Laserguards.

I'm always interested in what works for others, but in the end will always use what works best for me.

I have only 2 levers (Winchesters) with scopes: a model '85 low wall in 218 BEE and model 65, also in 218 BEE, that wears a vintage Winchester A5 scope that actually looks like it belongs on it.

I have a scope on only one of my lever guns.
It is my lever "varmint gun".
The rest are for plinking.
The only red dots that I have are on Ruger MK series 22 lrs.

Well I have the unusual problem of my eye sight is improving and has for the last 30 years. Commonly since this last eye prescription which really cleared things up at distance, I will leave my glasses off around the house and yard. My reading and close vision is not improving but I can still read without helpers. I have thought about going back to the Department of Motor Vegetables and taking the vision test again as I might not be required to wear glasses for the first time since I’ve been licensed. I’m 70 so that’s been a while.
So I asked the doctor and he gave me a fairly uninteresting answer as to why, but said it happens to a lucky few. I’ll take it.
Receiver sights are my favorite so my levers mostly sport them.
As far as gun optics goes I need my glasses. I also always wear my glasses in the shop where good vision from close to across the shop is needed besides the protection from flying debris is needed.

Still hitting with squirrel killing accuracy with the 39a & peeps...

a nice fixed power scope works for me and my hunting levers... a 2.5x or 4x is plenty of magnification for the woods of Oregon & our tricky ghosts of the forest. Red dots are great tools... maybe something lightweight might eventually make its way on a hunting rifle...

My eyesight has improved also. Also leave my glasses off. Don't watch TV with them. Most of the time, I use closed captioning for everything but sports and news. Asked the eye doctor and he said that usually happens just before you need cataract surgery. :sigh:
