I've never been able to get figure the straight scoop in him. Most accounts say his handlers/agents/whatever they are kept him out, at least at first. Then later it was because of an injury and later yet because of his age and family. I dunno. It's reported John Ford (miserable prick of a human being, but the man could direct a western!) treated Wayne like dog crap compared to Robert Montgomery because Montgomery actually served. Maybe stuff like that did happen, Gene Autry went and he was huge at the time. Clark Gable went and he was lots older than Wayne. There are a couple accounts that say he wasn't in any hurry to join up. Who knows? I wasn't there, that's for sure. But the list of those that did serve, even in limited roles, is long and covers a whole mess of well known people. Different times, eh?
Some guys managed to “dodge” , claiming being in a “critical” job etc. My dad was drafted when he was 35 years old, had 3 kids and one eye.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
I took an EMT class in the late 70's with a guy who was over 40 when he was drafted for WW2. I think he was 41 or 2 at the time. He was in great shape when I knew him and he laid it all on having served at such a relatively advanced age. I think genes had a lot more to do with it but for a guy in his late 70's he was in outstanding condition. There were guys in their 20's there that I'm certain he would have put on the floor if he'd wanted to. Awful nice gent. Hadn't thought of him in years. And taking an EMT class at that age too!!! Most folks give that stuff up when they get a couple kids and a house.

The pic of Babe Ruth made me remember this one that popped up recently, when did sports heros cease to become admirable people? Red Sox player Jim Rice who rushed to the aid of a four year old hit by a foul ball and got him to the team's medics who probably made the difference between the child living and dying.

You wonder if any of them would have the interest in someone other than themselves these days. Good on him!

If I had to guess I’d say a model 25, they are are just slightly larger then a model 12 in 22 LR. The model 25 in 32-20 might have a slightly larger barrel but I’d be surprised.
The model 141’s I’ve owned have larger forearms, a least the ones I’ve owned. Don’t now about the 14-1/2’s I’ve never owned one always wanted one, like hen’s teeth in this country.

road side signs said "DRIVE FRIENDLY"
They took those signs down long ago.
Put up new ones, 'drive at your own risk'. Going into DFW last nite, out-of-town traffic was solid from 175/I635/I20/I30/GB. I30E was completely stopped. Haven't driven this route on Fri eve before but it started at gunbarrel city , fortunately going the other way. Happy NOT to be in that mess!
Some still thank you for holding the door.

Yep, did that in grade school. Armageddon was a real possibility, in those days.
Looking pretty likely today!

They had us stand against the walls in the halls on the ground floor with our hands over our heads. That way the bodies would be where they could find them easily. In truth, where lived at the time we needn't have worried about a blast. Fallout, that was the baddie. Today I'm less than 30 miles as the crow flies from Ft Drum, maybe 45ish for the main post. That's not very far!
