Speaking of art and science...

I came across this at a new retail development in Salt Lake City. It was part of a public artwork. And yes, these are real rifles, with the bolts welded closed.

Having drooled over these rifles, but not had the money to buy one. It stopped me in my tracks.

One thing it proves is that the Springfield is a thing of beauty.1903s.jpg 1903bolt.jpg lines.

JMO,but it's an abuse of art.....or a cheap spinoff of "steam punk".Where,"artists" take perfectly serviceable machinery and hack it up for parts in a sculpture.

Now,if the rifles,or machinery is trash, then it ain't quite as bad but....it does encourage others to,hack.

Stepping off soapbox now.

I don't see any bad rust pits. Barrels can be changed easily enough and aren't expensive. The wood and hardware all looked serviceable. Glad the "artist" doesn't live around here or I might be inclined to leave a nastygram on his little project. It would be different if a bunch of pawn shop Savage 10s had been used, they still make those new.

Woh,on the #10's Ian...haha.

It's cheap....and yes,I've done professional art.Photo realism to be exact(cutaways of some pretty famous race cars/bikes)....

Deep subject to be sure but, just because some lame brain artist can't find suitable subjects?...give me a break.Cheap,cheap.

Actually if he describes himself as an artist there no need or desire to check him out. I put the vast majority of such "artists" in the same class as pedophiles and ambulance chasers.

Samuel Morse might do sumthin for you.I've stood in front of his paintings and almost cried.

And yes,it's that "Morse".

I love art and artists. And I actually think this overall installation is better than most public art. I just WANT one of those rifles. I'm going to call the guy and talk to him about it and find out where he got the rifles. It seems an expensive way to go--why not make a mold and cast them? Any way, I let y'all know. (Maybe I can "liberate" one with a torch.) Also, I think another part of the wall has a trapdoor springfield mounted.

I'll make sure my wife doesn't read that post rick!:D

I admit everyone shouldn't be lumped together but with the majority of those that I've known who claim to be artists that can be pretty tough.

I agree with you totally. I was just playing around. Shoot. A quarter of my safe is taken up by HER guns....
She just happens to be a (converted by me:)) Right wing artist.
