Thanks for the thread

Trying to not oil or grease them and have to clean them before use. Hopefully Walmart or other place sells desiccant or silicant packs. Just read mothballs absorb moisture too, but that would bother my wifes asthma.

Amazon sells desiccant packs in bulk. It's where I get mine. Have various sizes. Charcoal will absorb moisture in a pinch. My Dad's toolbox had them in there without any signs of rust.

Might use charcoal for my allen wrench sets. For some reason they take they worst of it.

Just picked up some Damp Rid (for multipurpose use) in the laundry section from Walmart. They have something in the automotive section for boats when shrink wrapped. Don't know which ones better... but Damp Rid is Calcium Chloride. Silica Gel packs are silicon dioxide. Google search says Calcium Chloride, once absorbs moisture, turns into water.... but the container says it harden and dissolves as it collects moister.

I don't have a large collection of ferrous molds, so this method works for me. The container is a Rubbermaid Brilliance 9.6 cup container, 3"x8"x11". Many sizes are made and there are other makes of similar items. It has an elastomer gasket and snap-over latches. The desiccant is a standard 40 gram commonly available item. Two is overkill, but I had them. Mike Venturino wrote about this several years ago. @Petrol & Powder please excuse the reference to the Magna Carta, but this does keep the molds dry!

If you are not in a hurry. Most local pharmacies have plenty for the asking.
yeah that is funny... I was asking the Pharmacist at Walmart I go to if they had any on the shelf in the store and he referred me to the automotive section, boat drier desiccant for when they are shrink wrapped... and I mentioned about the silica gel packs that come with meds. You would THINK he would have had some to give ?

Pharmacists don’t save those. We are very busy most of the time and are interested in getting the job done and speaking with patients.
Desiccants are just trash to us and go away quickly, no different from the cotton in the bottles to prevent damage in shipping.

Go to a craft store and they usually sell bulk desiccant beads used for drying flowers, etc. Some desiccant in a little sewn pouch and you are good to go. Toss them in the oven at low temp now and then to drive out absorbed moisture.
