Suggestions for a 44 Bullet

What's all the fascination, with 300+ grain bullets in the 44 Magnum? o_O I doubt very much there is much Grizzly Bear hunting going on.

Disadvantages out weigh the advantages. IHMO

1. Recoil generated is significantly higher.

2. The POA is 9-12" higher in a revolver. So sights must be adjusted for lighter bullet weights.

3. Waste more lead, down range, if you can't recover them.

4. 1-38" twist barrels, don't do well with them.

The 265 RNFP is the heaviest 44 caliber bullet mold I own. Most used mold is the 240 SWC. If and when, I do purchase another 44 caliber mold, it will in the 190-200 grain range.

I find the 310gr bullets have much less recoil at 1150fps than the 255gr at 1400. Definitely not near as snappy.

My suggestion would be the 265gr ranch dog or the Lee 430-310 copy. I also really like accurate's 43-255R if you decide to go a little lighter. It shoots really well in my ruger SBH Bisley.

And the deer don't like it either.

Nice shot Will.
I'm working with the 265 Ranchdog also. Haven't shot a deer with it yet, just a couple beaver.
I used the RCBS 245 KT on three black bears with good results. I like two holes and they were all successful at 1250 fps. Gave up on SJHP's for bears.

Recoil responses are very subjective, at best. I have a couple heavy-for-caliber moulds usable in 45 Colt, and have test-driven both in the BisHawk x 7.5". The Lee 310 round FN/GC at 1200 FPS lets you know that primers functioned, but wasn't ugly about it like 250s @ 1400 from my 4" Mtn Gun. The RCBS 45 rifle/325 FN-GC design won't cast big enough for its intended 45-70 applications, but sizes down nicely for the 45 Colt. Those shot well from the BisHawk, but both the Lee and the RCBS hit high at 25 and 50 yards with the rear sight bottomed out. Ruger and CZ both have slick front sight change-out options on a few of their iron-sighted rifles, and adapting same to the boomer revolvers seems like a great idea to me.

I have used more 265-300 gr bullets in my Super Redhawk than anything else. Mostly because they are what I have moulds for. They have done well for me so far so I keep using them.
I hope Al gets the 240 gr RD mould run sooner than later. That should work well and give me a good 44 special bullet too.
I'm more interested in bullet design in many cases than bullet weight. I prefer a nose that tapers to full diameter over an SWC type nose and bands. Those bullets in 44 just tend to be on the heavier side of things.

I have LBT's 280 WFN bullet. Definitely a winner!
Never shot a deer with it, but on a good day, from my scoped S&W Classic Hunter, it will shoot into 1-1/2", 5 shot groups at 100 yards.
Recoil is not bad with a full load.
