Nice rig, nice shootin.....internet,what's that?Haha, some folks were casting and loading before there was an internet...or TV...or...But,I think you know that.
We have a serious Deer issue here.Won't say it's a "problem" cause, they're pretty easy to hunt, and a perfect meat on the grill.I've shot them with bows(we build recurves and longbows),handguns, shotguns, and rifles.By far the most challenging is handguns for me.But will say it's got to be right at the top for rewarding hunting experience.Takes quality field practice, lot's of it.Total confidence in shot angle and placement, and confidence in the terminal ballistic side of your load.
My favorite Deer handgun is an early(1980-81),4" 629.With two completely different loads. If shooting/culling does its a 180XTP runnin @90% or so up the vel ladder.Dbl lungs, broadside right around 30-40 yds.The other load is the classic 429421,2400.This is for bruiser bucks or when in steeper mnts.(shot angles).
IME,with bigbore at least,handguns.....try not to let them get too close.Inside of 15 or so yds and the roar of a .44,even with ideal shot placement, sends them ballistic,IMO....largely due to the noise.I've even seen when shooting at extreme close range that the sound/shock waves would knock small, attending does off their feet....that weren't the target!....IOW's,shoot a big deer, and the smallish one next to it gets blown off its feet with the eruption.
So,yes, they can be too close with a bigbore. One more challenge to handgunning.....you need to find your ydg window. But it may not be a static one, depending on conditions and shooting lanes. This is why field shooting at different ranges is so important. In archery it's called "stump shooting".A roving style of practice that has a long traditional history.....one,that adapts very well to handgun practice.
Shooting a Encore Pro Hunter? model today. It's the SS fluted .243 tube........4-12 on top....RCBS 95G,IMR4198,Fed primer doing the business at 2300FPS.
