Been cleaning the bore all day on a gifted Rifle from my good buddy Brian P!
I know nothing about these rifles: Can anyone chime In?

Slug the bore if you have visions of cast for it. 7x57 bores are all over the map on military rifles.
They all generally do well with 175 JRNs, but many require very large cast to work well.

Pleasant, effective cartridge, a personal favorite in my Ruger 77 early model. I also enjoy a
really accurate Rem RB #5, although have not gotten it out with my new lenses.....may be
unable to shot it any more. :( That rifle would do 1" at 100 with a mild load of 4064 under
a 175 Hornady JRN.

If I had to guess, I'd wager that the bore is on the " generous side ", possibly as large as .287 - .288 ".
I have a pair of nice modern 7X57 mm rifles that are nail driving accurate.

I have no experience with older surplus 7X57 rifles.

Ben is quite right, my 1916 slugs out at a whopping 0.287" and the throat is measured at 0.290"

Greetings
Had one in Chattanooga 35+ years ago that was sporterized. Was fun to shoot and reasonably accurate with heavier bullets 160's +. Had a Timney trigger that was a great improvement.
30 years ago bought 4 1916's that had been rebarrelled to 308 by Israel. Beat up wood but the one we still have and the one our son I AZ has still chug out the ammo just like a Mauser should. Bought a Timney trigger for mine a couple months back which will be an improvement over that military trigger.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
I don't have that model, but I do have a '95 that's simply one tough, good shooting hunka metal and wood. My barrel is a little rough, and I don't recall ever doing anything with the jacket fouling. I've put cast through it, but it's nothing special there. 160 gr jacketed all land in the same general zip code, and with my eyes and open sights, that's okay. It's rainy day/tractor gun for me. I find the small ring Mausers to be very acceptable platforms for my shooting. I'm not trying to get a 7x57 that will push a 140 at 5k fps, so old metal and times effects aren't a big deal to me. Have fun, those are solid old girls.
