Thinking of doing some woodworking on my 03

I am about to do some woodwork on my 03. I love this rifle because it is accurate but I hate the stock. I am not a cheek-piece guy so I am thinking of taking it off. I think it would be fairly straight forward to do so.

I have looked on the Boyds site for a replacement but did not find anything that would be any better. If I replace I could keep the old stock the way it is. I do not kn ow if I am up to a semi inletted stock job or not. Decision time!

I would replace it. Get a stock from Boyd's and dive in. Take your time, always think ahead, and be prepared to get frustrated at times.

Oh, take photos of the progress. Gun guys like that stuff.

Best way to overcome the "wondering" is to dive in. Have wittled over several stocks and learned some.

Looking of that I can't help but cringe like I did when my FIL took a five-figure Ed Aubert K-80 buttstock to a fitting hack for some bandsaw, belt sanding, and aluminum pillar/plate work. Fixed up the raw spots with a dab of tung oil and now it's not worth the price of the screws and parts installed on it. Not that this is a $15,000 stock, or that you can't do a nice job re-shaping and putting an even better-filled finish on it, it's the principle. Somewhere, someone has a really nice rifle with a scope who'd love to have that stock......

If you're not confident about your ability to fit and bed a $100 Boyd's stock, go ahead and buy one and do it anyway, it will be easier than stripping, re-shaping, cleaning the checkering, and re-finishing the one you have, plus you'll be that much farther ahead with experience.

Look on fleabay for a stock first. that should give you an idea what your stock might be worth. at that point, either jump in feet first and remove the cheek-piece...or order a stock, whether Boyds (highly recommended), or snipe one on fleabay.

I have a pre-64 Win mod 70, that needed the action bedded, but wanted to keep the original stock, all original (collector value). I found a very beautiful maple stock with nice figure...but was dinged up, for a very reasonable price on fleabay...I chicken'd out and didn't bed it myself, and had a gunsmith do that...and still haven't fixed the dings yet...it was mostly about getting the gun to shoot. The 3rd photo in the OP of my SL68 continued thread, is that fleabay stock

It is only a piece of wood, will there never be another tree? Work slowly and carefully, as all you need is a pocket knife and a bottle of linseed oil. Skill comes with practice.

is that a Bishop stock?
too bad it ain't for a mauser I'd send one from a rifle I pulled down some time back and make a swap.

a lot of people don't like these stock styles and it's mainly because they have never really learned how to shoot one.
I'd love to have that stock on my Bergara 0-6 the one it has now is made to shoot head high [European style]and finding the sweet spot is a bit of a chore for me.
I need to change the scope on it and re-set where it all sits to bring everything more into a natural alignment for me.
fitting a stock is a whole science, [and is why some shot guns cost 15-K] but if done properly the gun just becomes a natural comfortable extension of your body.

Yes I wouldn't mess with that stock! Find another on line and work on it! this way you could always go back!

Exactly. I like the way Jon put it, too. They still make Walnut trees but they never did make very many stock craftsmen.

Freud would have gotten a kick out of that schnabel. Looks like a great piece to re-customize.
