Wadcutter mold

Which wadcutter mould would you prefer, the H&G 50 6cav or the Lyman 358-91 4cav?

Any idea of value of each...in good condition?

Thanks

Either would work just fine.
Not many shooters have the ability to distinguish 10 rds with one and 10 rds with the other down range on target , as to differences in accuracy potential.

The 35891 will most likely be bought cheaper. Possibly by as much as 30 - 50% cheaper than the H & G # 50.

A friend of mine many years ago took 4 different revolvers that were know to be very accurate at 50 yards. He took a Ransom rest and tested 1,000's of rounds of reloaded 38 Specials in the 4 different revolvers to determine which 38 / 357 wadcutter was the most accurate.

He found the Lyman 35863 ( my own mould that you see below ) to be the winner in the accuracy dept.

One lube ring only filled produced the tightest groups at 50 yards.

The mold cast real well :

Problem is, Ben...I have been offered only the 2 listed.

I guess, I am seeking the lesser of the evils...between these 2...and, honestly, I don't really need either as a Lee 2 hole would serve my purpose as I am only going to cast a couple of hundred per year as I really like .44 wadcutters...but I really don't much care for .38 wadcutters.

Many different moulds could possibly meet your requirements ? ?

If I only needed 200 or so wadcutters per yr., I'm not certain that I'd invest major bucks into molds similar to the ones you've described.

But , that is me, someone else may see it different.

A 4 cav 358091 Lyman mould can usually be had for about $50.00 less handles. Add about $25.00 if handles are included. You can often find 4 cavity Lyman wadcutter moulds with handles, on the auction sites starting around $60.00, but there will be about $15.00 involved in the shipping charges.

A 6 cavity H&G 50 often sells around the $150.00 mark with handles. All of that value is wrapped up in it being a 6 cavity H&G as opposed to the more common 4 cavity. For a while there I was buying 4 cavity H&G 50s for around $75.00, and usually sold them for $100.00. I used to flip moulds a lot. H&G moulds must come with their handles, the handles varied from year to year and there's no guarantee you'll be able to find a set of handles that will fit the mould with any ease. No handles equal "no sale", as far as I'm concerned. The value of H&G moulds without the correct handles plummets like a stone. An H&G mould with a modified set of LEE handles on it for example is pretty meaningless.

If the H&G mould is complete, and in really good shape, would be a far better thing to own and use.

Thanks...for the price info.

They both have handles and I would have never bought the h&g without the correct handles being on the mold...I just was not sure of the value of it.

I only mentioned it because I see so many on the market without handles anymore. At full street price!

I was thinking I had a RCBS WC mold laying around, that I didn't need anymore? Because of this thread, I go look for it, I can't find it, I must have sold it?
Anyway,
While I was looking around, I find a minty Ideal 358432 4 cav WC mold. I don't know where this came from, I have no recollection of even buying this? I have kept real good notes of all the molds I've owned (and sold) in one paper notebook, and every casting session since I started casting in 2010, in another paper notebook. I couldn't find 358432 or Ideal WC or anything in either notebook. I bought a bunch of stuff from a local fellow back when I started casting, I posted about it, and I even searched that thread, to see if there was a mention of a Ideal 358432, as I did get a bunch of 4 cavity molds from that guy.

But Nope, no mention of that mold?
I'm thinking I've never cast with this 358432 mold before.
I guess I know which mold I'll be casting with next.

Thanks shootnlead, for posting about this, it's kind of like getting a new mold for me.

I started my casting career with 3 double-cavity tools......a Lyman #358430 (195 RN)--an Ideal #358432 (160 WC)--and the WC's 32 caliber version #313492. These latter 2 WCs have a button-nose that could pass muster as a "bore-rider", but that might be over-stating the case a bit. Both of these wadcutters have shot VERY well for me over the years, and have accounted for a large number of evil rats and collaborating jackrabbits. I haven't loaded either bullet much past 900 FPS, even in magnum brass. I suspect they would be fine to 1200 FPS+ if fit well to the gun launching them. At 800-900 FPS, I would have no qualms about collecting coyotes with the #313432.
