What should I buy

With the sale of my 30 xcb rifle, I hereby name it "Lemming", I will have some cash burning a hole in my pocket.

Any suggestions on what I "really need"?

A Freedom Arms model 83 10 inch 41 mag. If ya really have to then make it a 44 mag. Want to splurge make it an octagon 10 inch.

After the first range trip you will be a changed man with a true appreciation of fine shootin irons. :D

1- that is a bit more cash than I am ready to spend
2- a 41 mag holds no interest for me, now a really good 357 is a different story.
3-am I getting this for me or for you?

I will admit that an FA is on a wish list, I just need to convince myself I "need" one.

You asked this question . . .

Any suggestions on what I "really need"?

Only that you have never had one is that even a question, as I said . . .

After the first range trip you will be a changed man with a true appreciation of fine shootin irons. :D

You will also wonder why you ever bothered with long guns. :D

Ok, so why a 41 mag? Just because?
I really think a 357 would be better for me long term. I'm not a huge fan of recoil. My 44 mag is OK but for no more than 50 rounds in an outing. Now a 357, it would be fine all day long.

The fact I would be amazed by the accuracy potential of an FA isn't even a question. I KNOW I would be a changed man.

I've shot some amazing accurate revolver's, competed with the FA 357 and won championships with it but the single most accurate revolver I've ever fired was an FA 10" 41 mag. Just amazing shooting from the bench scoped and stacking bullets on a 150 meter (164 yards) steel target.

Feb2006FA357.jpg

That's five shots, the target from the top of the leg to the back is 6 inches.

The 41 has more energy than the 357 and less recoil and flatter trajectory than the 44.

Stop shooting 300+ grain bullets in the 44 and recoil won't be an issue with the right grips on the gun.

Always had a fascination with 41 mag. Colt should have offer an iteration of the Python in 41 mag. Load it down to 41 LC velocities or up to full house mag potency. Seems like as near to perfect combination of dia., weight, velocity as one can get in a handgun bullet.

Back to the subject.

Don't know what you have, so don't know what you need.
Another month or two of tuition for the mechanical engineer?

Tuition is covered, I put enough away each month to pay for that. Next May I get the equivalent of a 30 K per year increase in pay!

I am looking for something fun to shoot. A good plinker, easy to shoot lots of. Something my wife will enjoy too. I want to get her to the range more and this gun is part of what I'm looking to use in that regard.

Shhhh, don't tell Rick that is the direction I am leaning.

Would be a good choice if you really need to follow the herd and jump all over the latest fad. If that's not the case and your looking for your new all time favorite firearm it has been suggested. :D

Your Mrs. have a carry piece? Yes or no, get her a carry piece or another carry piece. One that can not only get the job done, but can be loaded light for just plain fun plinkin'.

What do you mean??? It's only and upper swap.

o_O

If only it were just an upper swap.

Radical firearms upper, $240 plus freight, on sale right now. I don't think one can be built for less unless an absolute bottom-dollar barrel and handguard is used, and the receiver bought on sale.

BUT.....
Scope base, $50 minimum, QD mount more likely, nearly as much as the upper.
Scope, if he buys one just for this upper, could be anything from $150 on up.
Brass, he'll probably do what I did and buy it because he's probably as sick of cutting cases and turning necks as I am. $65-100, depending.
Reloading dies, at least $45, if he's smart he'll get a Forster seating die too, $50, if he's even smarter, which I think he is, he'll just make one.
I think the 30 Sil mould will be bueno for starters, so no up-front investment there. He's got a shellholder and can easily make an expander die (note Brad, if you do, make the tip of the spud very long and pointy 'cuz those little cases wobble all over the place and the mouths get crunched).

Finally being able to chamber the AR-15 in a caliber that makes absolute sense on so many levels......PRICELESS.
