I say never put all of your eggs in one basket. Spread out primers and powder (separately of course} in small lots here and there and keep a master list.
I do the same, no sense for the Fire Dept only having one surprise, LOL.

I won't miss them. Once, I work up a load for a particular long arm............longtime elapses before I get back to it. Most of my shooting is with handguns. Rifles are boring..............unless it's a problem child.

Have most of a 8# jug of 4759.............. always looking for alternate uses.

The last round of this BS we went through I ran short of Unique and found I could get by pretty well with HP38 and it seems to be available around here most of the time.

I ordered a couple pounds of Shooters Choice heavy pistol. At $23/Lb. the hazmat charge is more tolerable. Loading up some 158 Hp bullets with 4227 this morning.

Hodgdon Seems much better in the production department. Could be Alliant is bogged down with military ammo powder manufacturing or powder for civilian ammo.

I would have preferred that Tom put the GC cavities on one end, rather than the middle. Interferes, if you want to cast more PB than GC by using it as a three cavity. Next time, I will specify my desires.

I recently tried some IMR 4227 in .44 mag. 19 grains under a 250 gas checked hollow point. My SBH really liked the load and gave me some fine offhand groups. Great hunting load but a bit stiff for plinking.

Pretty much always used Hercules/Alliant powders for the last 50 years. With just Unique and 2400, I can happily reload 9mm, 38/357, 44Spl/44 Mag and 45 LC. I tried other manufactures, like W296 & H-110 for the magnums. Didn't see any advantage over 2400. Took me years to go though a pound of each. When I moved, I dumped them for fertilizer, rather than transporting old powder.

Wasn't till I started rifle reloading, in the early 90's, that I tried the other brands. Still, I gravitated toward Accurate powders because of availability and cost savings, back then.

I never really branched out that much on pistol powders myself, finding the same powders to do so well for me that I had no reason to explore.

In 94, or thereabouts, I needed H110 and there was none. If I remember correctly, that was the beginning of one of the past shortages. I discovered WC820 and latched onto a few 8# jugs for $54 each.

During another shortage, I discovered W231/HP38 and decided it was worth buying more of. It came to the rescue when I was shooting a bunch of 45 ACP, having had several pistols for that cartridge at the time.

During the previous shortage, I found 300MP for sale when nothing else was, and at a discount price, so I tried that in lieu of H110. I like it. It takes a little more of it than H110, but it does wonders in the 357 Mag. Still need to try it in the 357 Max. I could, with confidence, say that if I had a bunch of 2400, I could survive just fine without H110/WC820/300MP. I'd be just fine with that.

Herco is one I tried long ago that works well in 357 and 44 Special cases. I'd grab that if it were available. I'm sure I could duplicate most of my Unique loads with it, by slightly reducing the charge. I've shot Red Dot and Green Dot in these cartridges, from partial cans someone else gave up on. They worked fine, but I've never restocked either.

Bullseye is one I haven't paid enough attention to, though I've bought and used it in the past. The fact that you can load so many 32s, 35s or 44s with it from one pound is appealing and it has worked well for me, but Unique did as much as I wanted to do and gave me more flexibility.

I used to buy H414 for $8/# to fire-form wildcats and it was s good powder, but have stick with mostly the 4350s and H335 for most of the rifle-shooting I do. Maybe knowing more about other powders would be handy, as beggars can't be choosers, but I'm OK on powder for the time being. Much more than I could carry if I had to "scoot" anyway.

Wouldn't turn my nose up, if a ran across Bullseye in a jug. Very economical. Many shots per pound. Found it useful in 9mm, 38 & 44 Special. Even use in in my 357 LCR, for a moderate load. I have a pound and a half, left. Conserving, it nowadays. Have a variety of partial one pounders of other fast powders, I'm using up and not planning to restock............Red Dot, AA#2, W-231, Power Pistol and True Blue.

Just sharing what was posted Feb 6th on Accurate Shooter forum by a guy who works at Alliant...

"Guys,
We are still in business, but demand clearly exceeds what all of us are able to get into distribution to meet that demand. We are continually receiving material, packing and shipping out as fast as we can and trying to spread the available supply to our twenty-some distributors.
I am sorry to say, but this will take some more time to stabilize.
Best,
Paul"

Three years ago I bought jugs of Herco, 2400, and WST because it was what was available and on sale. With these powders I can load some type of cast load for every gun that I own.

I’ve also picked up pound cans of various different pistol and shotgun powders and found a use for all of them. I can load 45 ACP, 40 S&W, 357 Mag, 38 Special, or 32 ACP all day long with any of these other powders like Ramshot Zip, W231, Unique, AA no. 2, or Bullseye. Most of these can also be used in low node cast rifle loads.

I more recently picked up a jug of AA4350 because it was available, not cheap but available. This powder can cover most of my jacketed hunting bullet needs.

But, I also have a hodpodge of random partial and full 1 pound cans of other rifle powders, SW Precision, W748, W760, H4895, H-414, Reloder 7, Norma MPR, IMR 4350, and IMR 4831. These I have also figured out a use for, but can’t replace or am unwilling to pay the high prices that some of these are fetching right now.

I understand the frustration with not being able to find what you want, when you want it. Being relatively new to reloading I have bought what was available, when I came across a good deal.

I’m still developing loads for different guns, trying new things. In the future I will run out of these powders. I expect that I will move on to the next available option that is cost effective. I don’t mind doing the research and finding out what works.

I like many of the Alliant powders, 2400 especially. But if they folded up tomorrow, I could figure out how to keep loading for all my guns.

when your burn rates overlap like they do, everyone makes a red-dot close-nuff clone or a 4831 clone, etc.
it's nothing to adjust from one to the other by going up or down a half or full grain.
