i've owned 5 or 6 ought six's. i have an Arisaka in the '06. its a good cartridge, but....................i don't like it. i love the 7x57. that one really kills deer out of proportion. i used a 139gr hornady fn and i think imr4320 or 3031? around 2400-2500fps and it could do a doosie on the shoulder or behind the shoulder. i think that i can remember 3 or 4 deer that weren't DRT. they go about 20-30 yards and then fall down. i can't count the deer i killed with the 7 mauser.

the '06 doesn't bring back memories of deer. 125 - 180gr fn or rn were the pills fer me. the 180gr rem rn(factory load) was at the top and next was 170gr seirra fn going 2400+/-fps. been there, done that, is all i have say.

i shoot my home made 150's at deer in the Bergara, right on 2800 fps MV.
i was never a fan of the recoil the 0-6 can generate in some rifles. [yeah looking right at you rem -700]
never really had much of an issue with it in the heavy mil-surp rifles or the Garand, but they got godawful heavy to carry around.
the 7 ICL never got too bad until i got it ramped up to 3-K with a 140.
now the one that i really like is my 25-06 running a 100gr. bullet, right at 3-K fps, that one kicks like most of my cast bullet loads do.
i never paid it much mind until i was shooting a buck from one ridge to the other, and watching it jump and die in mid-air.
for some odd reason the only thought i had was of the recoil mimicking the jump off the bench my AR-30 has pushing a 170gr bullet at 2450+ fps.

but i agree the 7mm does kill very well and especially that hornady 139gr. bullet when you keep the MV below 2900 fps.
i've used that combination in the above mentioned ICL at 2875fps to [seriously] kill rabbits up to and including Moose.
never shot a mouse with it though.... LOL.
none of them ever went over the required 20 steps except for the one that tumbled down a mountain i wasn't looking forward to walking up.

That's a good thing as long as you don't have to go down the hill before you have to climb back up it lugging the brute too .

I've had a Love affair with the ought-6 my whole Life. I wanted to shoot one since I was about 5yrs old. That was the age We got to go shooting with Dad and others. It was always a BIG weekend. Jackrabbits and Bar-B-Que. There was a old falling block .22 for the little ones. But the GARAND ! Now that was something ! Watched Dad spin a tin can from 50yrds to 200. Beat H**L outa Me at 10yrs old. Finally got mine from the old DCM back in 1988, 28months I waited. It was a Winchester made in June 1944, Beautiful shape. Maybe 90%, Luck was with me that day.

I've cycled thru those 100rd MTM boxes of "SL 53" more then 5 times now, all 12 of them. Full power loads; H or IMR 4895 under 150gr JSP's or FMJ's. Whatever I could find. Plus at least 2,000rds of that dirty Greek junk.

OUGHT-6 FOR EVER !!!!! WOO HOO !!!!!!

you ought try the m700 mountain rifle in '06 and a 180gr rem rn. oh and lightly handle the rifle when you are squeezing the trigger. i was 18yo and i got the dreaded scope ring over my eye!!! i learned fast to HOLD the lightweight rifle.

my grandpap(RIP), dad and my late uncle all had the '06. my grandpap had a rem early model 760, my dad has 1960-70 rem m760 and my late uncle had a rem m7600. it was embrassing to 13yo who had a win m94 in 30-30. my first '06 was a rem m700 mountain rifle. i sold it and bought m700adl and i sold it and bought a m700bdl and i sold it to buy........(5 or 6 times in '06)

my m94 was not a disappointment, i killed a whole lot of truck loads with the 30-30. i got the m94 when i was 13yo at christmas from my grandpap. now it is a 1972 win m94 with a williams fp aperture sight in 35/30-30(JES Reboring) and it still kills deer.

Well Todd I shoot a mid 80’s Winchester Featherweight that weighs 7 pounds plus the scope, original thin recoil pad and I shoot full house 220 RN Hornady’s from the bench and field positions. Without any difficulty. Yes the recoil is stout, but not bad. The Winchester Featherweight rifles fit me perfectly. I also have the exact same rifle that is a rebored from a 270 to 35 Whelen. No problem with 250’s. Recoil is stout, but, nice rifles.
My normal 06 load is Hornady 190 SPBT over a full load of 4350. The Whelen I’m looking forward to loading some 290 NEI round nose but haven’t yet. Only had the NEI mold for over 40 years, but, it’s moved up to the short list.

SO I’LL TAKE THAT GOOD OLD 06.

But one of these days, sooner rather that later, I’m going to have a Winchester Featherweight in 7x57. I know where one is locally (Mike), just got to pry it out of his hands. That is a 7mm to own. Well there’s others, but, I’m a poor boy and the Featherweights are my gun.

Damn you hit one of the 3 calibers I’m after. That is if some other firearm of opportunity doesn’t distract me first. 257 Robert’s, 6.5 Swede and the 7x57.
I’d have a hard time parting with a WRA push feed Featherweight once it’s in the locker.
But going to be up your way towards the end of next week. Bailing out of this blistering hot country on Sunday afternoon working our way through Utah for couple of days then your neck of the woods, then west to the Snake and mosey up to Washington.
So once I get the 7x57 I will not let it go as it’s one of the 3.
SO, can we work something else out? Different trade? Money? Easy on the money thing, just filled up my heating fuel tank before the Brandon prices go up again. And this Grandkid trip at Lake Havasu I’ll be paying on for a while.

i kinda actually baby this one, let you hold it though... LOL

let me know when your coming through.
the snow is starting to melt back, but it's still cold [cold like between 0 and 10] at night, and like 32 or so during the day.
it's slowly working it's way towards spring though.

Yeah I kinda thought you might be baiting me just a bit with that offer.

Yes will keep in touch, when we get our trip figured out. Been watching weather all along the way. So far 14* is the coldest we’ve been in and it’s not pleasant. Plan on RV parks so we can plug in then drive our rice rocket around to check out the eastern side of Idaho

I really like the 80s Featherweights, but my .270 is an absolute butt stomper. It has broken the guts out of three scopes. The rubber pad is rock-hard and I bought a genuine Winchester replacement a couple of years ago but it is about a quarter inch too short and the screw holes don't line up. The rifle has also destroyed two glass bedding jobs, so for the third go I carved out all the old Acra-Glas, bored out the stock bolt holes, and two-step pillar bedded it with Pro-Bed and fixed the inletting of the bottom metal that was machined out of alignment with the receiver from the factory. Got a brandy-new Nikon 4-12x44 scope (chosen for featuring nearly 4" of eye relief) and a new one-piece mount with dual turn-in rings all torqued, lapped, and Loctited on it and bore sighted. I'm too scared to shoot the damned thing now, having problems keeping my dominant eye retina glued down. I will probably pull out the old RCBS 150 mould and make some nice reduced loads for it when I get around to finding a recoil pad that I can make fit.

the early 1990s remington mountain rifle was the same way. its a big part of why i sold it. the old savage m110 in '06 was easier on my shoulder.

i could not afford the win featherweight, i didn't graduate till 1990. then 3 or 4 years later, i had a wife and 2 sons. the 7x57 i want is a ruger #1. i was 15yo when i seen it. the rifle was leaning on a tree and a guy was gutting 4pt. i have a 1973 ruger #1 in 270 win and i enjoy it.

Well my wife Karyn has a 1895 Savage 75th year anniversary in 308 with a receiver sight and a real recoil pad. Which she shoots quite well. She’s also very good with her 44 CA Bulldog.
But I bought her the 270 Featherweight and she preferred the Savage. Hence it became a 35 Whelen. But none of the problems you have experienced Ian.
Recoil was not a problem for her she simply prefers the Savage lever.

the win m94 top eject is the right one fer me!!!

in .308" caliber its either a bubba-ed 1898 Springfield Armory in 30-40 Krag or a Remington m14 in 30 Remington. years ago, i had the chance to buy a savage m99 in 300 savage or a m99 in 250 savage, but i was poor and it soon went away. i really liked the 250 savage tho.

oh i'd trade for the X57.... LOL
Littlegirl long ago wandered off with my Tang safety Ruger in 7mm, and i swapped off the Ackley barrel i had when i got the XCB made.
probably should have kept that barrel and had it fit to something else.

I love Savage 99s, nothing seems to handle better than my 99EG in .300 Savage.

I like Model 70s too, either push feed or controlled feed ones. I saw a Feather weight (push feed one about a week ago chambered in 6.5x55, kinda pricey. Had it been a 7x57 I'd have likely sold a kidney if I'd had to. I may go back and see what kind of deal on it I can make.
