My Vintage Sniper match load is 49 gr 4064 under a 175 MK, pretty much a max load, but
I have worked down in 0.5 gr increments and not found it's equal, so there it stays. No problems
with brass life, but I'd work up to it, and I weigh all on a ChargeMaster. LOA made a significant
difference, to. Have had excellent results with 165 JHP hunting bullet from Sierra on paper, not
shot anything alive yet with it. These are in 03 Springfields with original barrels, and one
Savage, plus a sporterized 03A3.

Okay. I got the new scope today. I'm WAYYYY happier with this scope compared to the last one. Well worth the extra $50. I got it mounted and bore sighted. Now it's time for the range.
I need to decide on a good all around bullet to work up an accurate load to send Leupold the info for the custom turret. A good bonded 165gr poly tipped bullet was the first thing to cross my mind.
Black tail, Mule deer, and big costal elk could all be possible.
I can always order other turrets for $60-$80 but this first one is included with the purchase of the scope.
I bought this scope from Midway and I got a $75 gift card with my purchase. I'll be using this to try a couple different kind of bullets.
I hope to go shoot this thing this weekend. I'll post results when I do.

I just used my gift certificate to buy some 150 and 165gr Nosler Accubonds.

you'll probably like those.
I have some loaded on top of a case full of rl-22 I need to try.
they have a pretty good jacket design near the bottom.
I'm kind of afraid they will open too quickly for my tastes

The only RL powder I have on hand(or have ever tried) is RL15
I just loaded some Bob ammo with it. My .308's hate the stuff....o_O
H4895, H4831, or IMR4350 will be the likely choices.....

The guy who ran the operation where I hunted in RSA was very convinced on the Barnes bullets. He is a
really observant guy and hunts pretty much every day with clients and sees huge quantities of game shot
with every kind of bullet there is. He is really sold on Barnes - for African plains game. The kudu is about like
a slab sided, long legged elk. Impala and blesbok are like small white tails, maybe 100-120 lbs. Wildebeest is
maybe moose sized body. He has watched the Barnes on all and like it and the Nosler partitions, which is
what I was using in my 7x57.

I had tried out the old blue coated Barnes X without anything to be excited about. I asked before I went if there was
anything I could bring, since I know that some stuff which is easy to get here, and affordable, like Leu scopes are hard to get
and very much more expensive in South Africa. His local contact said to get some 7x57 ammo with Barnes bullets
if I could find it. Told him none commercially available. I grabbed a box of 140 TSX 'triple shock" because I liked
the (then) new grooves, seems necessary in a solid Cu bullet. First load I tried was spectacular. My Ruger 7x57 is
a bit of a picky thing, but it put the first try, "middle of the road" load 50.0 IMR 4831, half way between starting and
max because it was somebody else's rifle. This one shot about 1.25 at 200 yds right off. Peter (safari outfit owner)
was extremely pleased, said it was by far the most accurate ammo he had ever had for his nice custom 7x57
on a military Mauser 98 action.

Another hunter and his wife going to hunt the same place asked me to make them some ammo. They tried samples
of 140 TSX and 175 Horn RN which had proved excellent in my Ruger. His wife used an identical Ruger 7x57 to mine.
She chose the 175s and dropped 6 animals with 6 shots. Her husband wanted a TSX load, and the best I had in
my Sav 110 .30-06 was 165 TSX over 59.0 RL19, new RP brass, CCI200 primer, LOA=3.300. This load did just
a touch under 1" at 100 for three shots for me, three is all I test with hunting rifles. He liked it, too.

Peter (RSA hunting owner) took a kudu with one shot, broke both shoulders and was found under the hide on the far side, the first day,
backing up an incompetent client. He showed me the bullet. Looked just like the ad pix, except had lost part of
one petal, on the bones, I guess. He shot several other animals while I was there, was very pleased, wanted more
ammo, not possible, unfortunately, can't ship ammo into RSA.

In any case, if you are going jbullet, I can recommend the TSX and the loads above as safe and accurate in several
rifles. Since you said you didn't have RL powders, try 50.0 4064 under that 165 TSX, all other
stuff the same. That wasn't as accurate in my Savage as the RL-19 load but was fairly good.

The Barnes TSX is an awesome bullet. I used a fair number in RSA too. They did exactly what the ad says they do. Faster you drive them e better they seem to perform.
I used a 130 gr in 270 Win as the 150 wasn't stabilizing completely. The 130 is the same length as a traditional 150. A healthy charge of RE22 gave me better than 3000 fps and really good accuracy.
Did I mention I like that tang safety Ruger 77?

Bills 59grs of RL-19 load is I believe the same one I used in my Buddy's rifle only under a Hornady bullet.

i only loaded the rl-22 because I bought a pound of it some time back for like 18$ it's been gathering dust for about 10 years now.
I think I was going to give it a run in the 7X57 AI, or the XCB but just never got a roundtuit.

Brad, my old 7x57 has the tang safety. IMO, this is where the safety should be on a long gun.
My Mossberg shotgun has it there, too, right under your thumb. Savages have it kinda
buried a bit, but still in the right place.
I am not at all surprised that the 130 .270 would work well.

So I settled on a hunting load with J words to send off the info to Leupold for my custom turret cap.
165gr Nosler Accubond loaded with 57gr of IMR4350 for an average muzzle velocity of 2740fps.
This load will shoot 3/4" 5 shot groups @ 100 yards on the regular. This is a pretty sweet rifle and scope.

takes a little getting used to from the bench don't it?
the more comfortable you get with it the more you'll like it.
