Gun show deal plus a 31-1 S&W

Went to our local gun show this morning and a friend had an unusual amount of interesting goodie’s. The goodie’s came from the estate of a fellow that I worked with back in 1978. John was not a close friend but and acquaintance where we would bump into each other a couple times a season. John was 4 years my junior and worked at a local glass and paint store. He was always helpful with any kind of coatings and paints to take care of what ever bazaar projects a person could come up with.
Anyway John died last spring having health problems for the last couple years.
But, back to the G S finds.
Delmar, another friend was selling off reloading items for the family.
There was 6 Lyman 2 cavity molds and one Hensley & Gibbs for sale. 3 Lyman molds did not have handles but the other 4 did. They all need to be cleaned up and two need spure plates. I asked Delmar how much for all 7 molds. Price $100. Sold.
Lyman molds:
356402
358242
35863
358429
429421
452374
And the H&G #50

But then there was a basically new RCBS 10-10 powder scale for $30.

I was needing a scale for my Oregon reloading setup.
So being quite pleased with my finds I wondered over to a buddies table who happens to be a Smith & Wesson collector. At Last springs show I was asking him about model 30 and 31 Smiths and he scratched his head and said that he probably didn’t have any that he wanted to sell but. He might have said that he didn’t have any, can’t quite remember.
So walking up to his table he has a model 31-1, 17, 34, 2 k14’s one is a single action and a model 49. I was smelling a trap here, the kind of trap I was happy to jump in. I know he was thinking of me when he chose his wares for his table.
Well I have a stainless 63 at home and I have blue 34 waiting for me at my brothers in California, just got to pick it up. Don’t need more K14’s, desperately anyway. Not that fond of the model 17, or the 49’s, but I’ve been wanting a 31-1 for quite some time.
This model 31-1 was a first glance, sitting in a glass case, appeared to be in really fine shape. It was in the original box with all the paperwork. My friend pulled it out and did the standard safety check of swinging the cylinder out. Except it was stuck. With a little more effort it opened with a crackling sound. My friend looked up and said that he was sure it was unfired. The crackling was dried grease or whatever S&W use on their pistols. My friend had never opened the cylinder. The pistol has very light cylinder marks from being rotated in the past. There was no blue wear anywhere, barrel ends, cylinder, anywhere. After looking it over I’m convinced it is unfired as well. I can fix that.

I’m very pleased with this little pistol. It’s an itch that has been scratched most pleasantly.

I've the 4-inch version. Once you get the old grease replaced, you're in for a real treat. Tell your mould friend you're looking for an RCBS 32-98-SWC or a NOE 315-102-SWC mould and it will get even better. By the way Starline currently has available 32 S&W Long brass, just picked up a box for myself.

I have the LEE 313 095 and a 313 116. I’ve got a decent batch of Starline on the shelf. Both 32 short and long. Yeah the RCBS and the NOE are on the list. But my money supply was depleted beyond anything I’m going to share at this point with Karyn. But, I’ve been waiting for one of these, and to tell the truth this is only the second one I’ve seen.
The big plus is it’s as new. You know the old selling point of “NIB”

Likewise have some 32s. My brother to this one is a 31-1 Nickle. Came with 'pimp' (ala GSP!) pearl handle grips. Hate them/found a set of stags for it. Love the gun! And the caliber! You will def enjoy. and, if you ever want to shoot the equivalent of 32 cal 22 shorts, try some 32 shorts!

Yeah I’ve got a Ruger SP101 in 327 which I shoot 32 long and H&R’s in. The 327’s I believe I’m just going to break them down and load them down, or just let them collect dust.
Had a Colt Pocket Positive which I just didn’t care for but in all honesty I didn’t give it a fair chance. Plus I was offered a nice trade which I couldn’t pass up.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
I don't know whether to be outrageously happy for you or to take up hating you as a full time hobby!!! ;) I have seen exactly 1 J frame 32 in my life, and it was a 1 7/8" job with a price tag that was ludicrous at the time. I suppose I'll have to stick with being happy for you and very sad for me. All it needs to be perfect is a J frame adjustable sight to make it the perfect "32 Kit Gun"!!! Nice catch brother!

You done good. I have one and live it. For the most fun you can have with your pants on , it is hard to beat a 98 grain dewc and red dot. You get the added bonus of giggling every time you do the math on shots per pound of powder.

Go to the small local gun shows. Look for the table in the back operated by a cranky old fart who looks annoyed. Look carefully on the table those little guys have been known to hide under the .357s.

"I have seen exactly 1 J frame 32 in my life"

Wow - are they that 'rare?' I had no idea. Then, as typing this, don't know if I've ever seen more than the one I have now... Got lucky apparently/showed up at a show at a very reasonable price.

The little 32 is a fun shooter. I have a 3 1/4” 32 Hand Ejector, I frame. As much as I like the N frame ACP revolvers, the little I frame gets out more and more. The only thing better than the I frame would be as Bret mentioned, a 4” adjustable sighted 32.

No, changed my mind, make it a 3”. That way I don’t need new leather.

I found a model 31-1 with a 4” barrel. In the realm of “Just Plain FUN”, it ranks near the top.

I got a stash of several hundred new 32 S&W Long brass, about half Prvi Partizan and about half Starline. Should last me as long as needed.

The revolver now wears a set of Herrett’s grips (not shown) but they are game changers. The grips turned the gun from good to great.

After a little experimentation, I settled on “THE” loading:

A roughly 96 grain wadcutter from an Accurate 31-095W mold and sized to 313”. Lubed with White Label 50/50. A NOE .317 x .313” P expander plug in a Lee die body is the perfect expander for that bullet. 2.4 grains of Bullseye (supplied by a RCBS Little Dandy rotor #1 which should throw 2.5grs but doesn’t) rounds out the recipe.
