Near total loss

They may need help shoveling debris or swinging a hammer, who knows. I'd be out there myself if it wasn't a full two-day drive. Well, I say that, but I'd want to bring some guns and the People's Republic wouldn't let me across the border with half the stuff I'd like to bring.

Found the picture I was looking for. This is what the retaining wall looked like all the way around.

Dennis told me that ASR is going to bust their butts and try to get (at least the main public) range open by next week. They don't want to lose all the income from the holiday shooters. Fingers crossed. LASC might be operating from the Andy Gump for a few weeks. I've got a BBQ and an awful lot of paper plates and things to donate ;) I've seen pictures from before Rick and Co. built up the LASC range, and it was little more than a parking lot in the early years.

ASR will be using Mr. Gump also, their restrooms were also in the office building. History lesson. Did you know that there really was a real Andy Gump? Decades ago he started a porta potty business that grew to where porta potties throughout SoCal were better known as Andy Gumps.

Credit George Adams with a huge part of all the construction at LASC and a bunch at ASR. Without George LASC would never have been nearly what it was. George retired, moved to Texas and is raising goats.

Got some more info on the range property today, I found out how/why the LASC covered firing and the ASR retail store survived the fire. At 3:45 AM as the fire was just breaking out an LAPD training officer (Bob) that rents both the ASR and the LASC ranges for police training called Ron C, president of the Board of ASR and one of the founders of LASC who met at the main gate. They along with another person I don't know went to work fighting one of the worst firestorms in decades. ASR in addition to water tanks spread around the property maintains a small fire truck. When they arrived the main ASR office building was fully engulfed and they went to work with the truck saving the retail store, up the road from the store is Moore & Moore Sporting Clays which was also fully engulfed. At LASC the office and enclosed patio were also fully engulfed but the 200 foot firing line cover had just begun to burn which they managed to save. A burning telephone pole used as a barricade had blown under the LASC range truck and they pulled that out and saved the truck. Three metal conex boxes were also hosed down and saved.

Not bad for an early morning's work. Without their efforts LASC and ASR would have suffered much worse losses. Ron C. BTW is 78 years old. Because of their efforts LASC will be holding it's regular match schedule beginning this weekend. Temporary office, kitchen and eating areas have been set up as rebuilding begins. All of the fire debris clean up has been completed . . . Shooters to the line.

Wow, great job from a few guys saved so much.
I would be renaming the range or something. Those guys need recognition for what they did at great personal risk.

I'm planning to shoot Sunday. Will shoot my MT Woodsman with Aguila HV (one hole groups at 100 yards in tests), and my Freedom Arms 357 for the long range. The FA is a model 97, which is a little odd for silhouette - 158gr ZERO half-jacketed soft points over 16.0H110 that I have tested for accuracy and knockdown. Of course, as a devotee of Harry Pope and the "Stand up on your hind legs and shoot like a man" paradigm, I will, as ever, shoot the lowest scores of the weekend.

I promise, if I ever see these guys, neither of whom I've ever seen in the last 7 years, I promise to polish their shoes with the grease from my nose. Failing that, I've already given in cash and kind until it hurts. Let me get over my divorce before I adopt them as my heirs, okay?

Little doubt you have seen Ron at the range a time or two, though he hasn't shot in a long time. As for Bob, he is mostly there on days the LAPD has the range rented for their practice days. Bob is the Chief training officer from LAPD Metro. Ron is currently President of the Board of Angeles Ranges, one of the founders of and long time match director of LASC. Ron is also well known in Master Class Revolver Championships having won firing more 60x60 and 80x80's most likely than all others combined.

I guess being a newbie I don't move in the circles where Ron and Bob orbit. Dennis Robinson is the only Angeles guy I know, he's a wonderful guy, and an old silhouette shooter. He jockey's the tractor for LASC when we need dirt moved back and forth. He seems to work seven days a week, and appears to be the one who keeps Angeles running from day to day by applying the lash to the cashiers and RSO's. LASC is run day to day by JR Ray and Jerry Napier. Jerry has been rebuilding the firing line damage every day for the last few weeks, with help from others as available. I believe that JR is a retired roofing contractor and is working to get construction materials donated to rebuild the clubhouse.

Incredible they were able to save anything with the conditions they faced.
