I loaded some up with Universal. What powder do you like Gary?

I started, stopped and only shoot mine with Bullseye. 5 grns is where I started. I am bumping back to 4.5 and might try 4.0. But for normal all around, can't beat the 5 grns Bullseye imo.

I have two or three pounds of TG. But I have like 13 pounds of Universal. Just thought I'd give it a go.

universal should work well.
I have shot a bunch of unique in the 45, with the 200gr swc's.
about 5.8-6.0 grains was real consistent and actually has a smoother recoil impulse.
I was using some bulls-eye for some test loads recently and it was fine for taking down steel plates but it doesn't quite do what I'm looking for.
[I'm being picky in one gun with one boolit here]

I scored a bunch of once fired Speer .45ACP brass from a buddy who is tight with a local indoor police range.

Just out of curiosity I weighed like 10 loaded rounds and was surprised to see that the weight difference was only like 3.5gr.

Pretty consistent. Not that I shoot the 1911 well enough to see a difference.....

Mine are right around 303gr.
The bullet in HP form with this alloy average 208gr sized and lubed.

I shot up a few pounds of Clays using 4 gr with the MP version. Shot quite nicely for me. I have been using 4.8 gr of Red Dot lately.

Brad. I am the proud new owner of an 8lb keg of RD as well. It was my other choice.

The more I use it the more I like RD as a pistol powder. I have an 8 pounder to use when my 8 pounder of Promo is done. That will be a while.

I have been trying to not burn up my red-dot in pistols.
it does good work in them but I got plenty of other powders I would prefer to use in them instead.
clay's and 700-x are next on my 45 acp list for this particular pistol, but I got a bunch loaded with unique, green-dot, 231, and titegroup already.

Question regarding .45 ACP and Clays. Now I don't load for this but I am interested in Clays' suitability for the caliber. I have about 8 pounds and am thinking about swapping Clays for who knows what with a .45 shooter. He reloads but does not know Clays. Want to be sure I treat him square.

I tried Clays for my previous 1911 w/ the HG 68 clone (MP) I have. It would shoot EVERYTHING well or decent, EXCEPT Clays! My buddy had a 1911 that shot the Clays load fine. I simply gave up on it because mine didn't like it. And now two diff 1911s and haven't tried it again...

I don't reload shotshells......:D

I do, but Herco does the heavy lifting in that venue. Red Dot was the standard 12 gauge target load powder back before there was air, I have been away from clayblasting for a long time. The 12 gaugers seem to like using 20 gauge and 28 gauge shotloads in their weird trap guns; the few rounds I shoot anymore get done with my field loads in all gauges. That sort of return to reality does not sit well with the more refined types with the Italian clay toys, nor do my Rem 870 and Mossberg 500 shotguns. I was persona non grata at my old club, especially when I trimmed their fur with my evil shuckerguns.

sometimes I wish I didn't.
but I got some awful expensive reloaders sitting there, they are bout the only gun's I'm really any good with.
plus they pay you money and sometimes give you food for coming and shooting their targets.

Fiver. don't get me wrong. I love hunting grouse, quail, dove and geese. Never really got into duck hunting......
I just don't do it enough to justify the cost to set up.
I need to come visit you this spring and help you dispatch some sage rats and rock chucks.
My .22-250 is itching......

I use Titegroup for anything around 200 grains (@ 80% pressure) and for 220-230 I step on down to Universal. BE and Unique fill the same niche but are filthy, smokey, and still blowing flaming dirt what seems like 2' past the muzzle. BE and Unique will also dump a lot of half-burned kernels in a silencer and can make a neat pop when critical mass is achieved.

Clays never gave me good accuracy either. The perfect .45 ACP powder burn rate is RD/Promo/231 (and probably some Accurate powders I never messed with like #5), but RD doesn't meter well in some measures (like most of the ones I use on the progressives), and try as I might, 231 never, ever came close to shooting a good group for me. YMMV.
