So what do you think , is Ben sitting back and getting a big kick out of watching us?

When you guys shoot like you're shooting now with plain base bullets, you won't get anything but praise from me.

Dan.....that is some fine 100 yd. shooting.

I plan on bringing my chrony next trip, primarily to check the velocity difference between the red dot and universal.
Dan,
That would be super! I really need to know what's going on with the RD loads!
Is your jug of RD the old stuff or the new stuff with the "Now cleaner burning" call out on the label?
I think that is the issue because my old Hercules brand of RD didn't feel or act the way my new stuff does

Jim.....It is the old stuff.
But from what I can glean from the web,
the burn characteristics should be the same.

On another note Ian's comments on burn rates and the chart concerning Bullseye
were very interesting.

My take was that Bullseye was slower than Red Dot but because you needed so little of it that
the manufactures placed it as a very fast powder so people would not try to over charge their cases.

With Red Dot the opposite was true, it IS fast but very bulking.

This explains the wacky correlation I have been seeing for years in the reloading manuals between
Red Dot and Unique.

An example, two of my favorite loads for the 31334 ( NOE 311332) are 12.7 grs Red Dot and 12.4 grs Unique/Universal.
both print in the same place with the same accuracy.

According to the old burn rate charts THAT should not be.

Yes that is quite strange. Actually if you use the newest burn rate chart( Hodgen) that would be totally impossible.
We just got to see you crony results …. I take it you will be comparing equal loads of each? Please keep us posted! I'm at the edge of my seat!

Jim .....I can tell you that from my previous experience with Red Dot and the NOE 311332,
that one five shot string gave 3 rounds with identical velocity and a total SD of some ridiculously low number.
At the time I was comparing lubes, 50/50 and CR, can't remember which one won out in velocity and consistency.
I hate losing my notes.

It will be great to have a real world comparison. While Red Dot is an excellent powder for what we are trying to do It's behavior puzzles me.
We may find the truth.

I know I am a whiner at times but I don't bring my chrony to the range very often and when I do I try and do it when no one else is aroud ,other wise I end up spending the day running everyone elses loads through it.
We are a tight group here just like to help each other .

I know what you mean. When I got home last night I started going over my hundreds of GEW targets to find the one I said I would post for you, however, I just got totally confused
by some of my cryptic notations on the targets …to the point I could not be sure that it was the one I was talking about and to make matters worse with my old brain slipping I can't even remember the thread I posted in, that I said I would find that target! Frustrating!

JW...... Your rounds are loaded 5 @ 7.8 grs RD and 5@ 7.8 grs Universal. CCI LP primers.
While I am set up I am going to load 5 @ 7.8 grs Universal and Win. LR to see what we come up with.
All bullets have been weight sorted to .1 grs.

Dan,
I like the way you work…get right to it! Appreciate the testing for us.
I know what you mean. An older friend of mine that frequents our range made the mistake of bringing his up one time to test his new loads. He did get to test them alright however he ended up staying there for two extra hours while the folks lined up! He should have charge admission. Seriously 12 people had their loads tested and worse yet 75 percent of them were store bought factory rounds! They weren't handloads.
Before he packed up he asked me If I wanted to test anything I said thanks but I was ok & I helped him pack his car ( now you know I was dying to test my new .357 mag load I had brought to the range that day that was dead on just didn't have the guts to say yes!) & he didn't have the heart to turn anyone away. He sure didn't get to shoot much that day!

Dan,
Thanks! I just had a chance to look at your data. OK So your Red Dot is behaving like the old data / burn rate sheets! Just a bit faster then Universal (or probably Unique also)
Now I just have to figure out why the new pound of Red Dot I just purchased is acting the way it does!
Guess I will go back and test it again this weekend.

How many people lined up by your bench when the saw you with your Chrony?:p

I frequently get asked to run stuff over my chrony. I bet 90 percent of the time it is Khornet asking. Oddly, he owns a chronograph but I don't know if he has ever had it out of the box.

The guys at one of my clubs call and ask if I am coming and if so would bring mine. They usually bunch up. I let them set it up. One otherember got one but they shot that. Now they are really careful with mine.

Yeah! Why chance it if some else sets one up!...he is a smart guy!
