Savage 340 .30-30 coming - any tips appreciated

Bret4207

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Were it me I'd be looking for a period correct scope. Weaver K2.5, K4, older Redfield, something like that. I have a K4 that so old it doesn't even have dust caps on the adjustments. Still clear and as solid as my later K4's and ina slightly smaller package. They just look "right" on an older gun to me. And no worries about interference from bolt handles hitting the bell.

Great minds run in the same channels, Bret. I picked up a nice, optically sharp old K4 at a small
local gun show last weekend for the 342 in .22 Hornet for $50. I got a 3/8 dovetail cutter to
rework the front sight of the .30-30 rifle to accept a normal dovetailed front sight so I
can get it sighted in.

Good looking rifle. I assume someone added the checkering later, these were
not high dollar rifles. That checkering looks nice.

Select "photo library" if the photo is on your device. Pick the directory and the photo to upload.

Don't have too large a photo of it ends up being huge on people's monitors.

holy cow that's waay too nice for a 340.
my 325 looks similar to a K-31's wood, and the 340 is okay but about as plain as a fence post.

"That is awful nice wood for a 340."

YEAH it is! I have to admit, I bought the gun JUST for the wood. I DID want a 340, and in 222. Almost thought I got bit on this one. Didn't check gun per my normal protocol. At first thought the muzzle was worn out/sewer pipe. Lot of scrubbing, it doesn't keyhole at 100 yds, so think I am good. It is also fully acraglas bedded. Guy did a very nice job, brown die, matches the wood. Only negative is a big ugly extra flathead screw at front of the trigger guard. But, from what I have read, that is how they were customized/set up to shoot benchrest. Once I knew it wouldn't keyhole at 100, I put a Leupold VX1 on it. Just need to zero it. And now set up to reload. It will be my cheap shooter (both rifle AND reloads!) and I will shoot it a lot, and hopefully shoot some crows and 'yotes with it!

one of the best mods I have ever seen was to add a barrel with a crush nut like the savages have but with a recoil lug spacer tapped for a bedding screw to take away the barrel band.
then the rear screw was extended and a nut was brazed onto the receiver back of the trigger which accepted that longer bolt.
the rest of the rifle was fully bedded to the stock.

fiver, that sounds like a whole lot of work on a cheap rifle. I'm going to see how it shoots as-is first,
then if I need something, glass bed the bbl and front action ring, leave the rear of the action
free floating, and see how that does.

Got the 342 in hand now, .22 Hornet with scope base, and an old K4, now need some rings.

it does seem like a lot of work to convert a good rifle to be like other rifles.
but some guy's have tools and stuff and just gotta be a bit different.
he also done one up the same way and made it a 25-35.

Sometimes it is more about the fun of doing the work than whether it is
really necessary or even effective. I don't begrudge anyone their fun modifying
guns.

I wanted to have the .30-30 to leave around where I might need it where it could
possibly be more likely to be stolen. Wanted a good rifle that I wouldn't cry too much
if it was gone, but would be a good tool, too.
