SR 4759

Two issues with metering SR 4759; it is uncoated with anything but graphite so is coarse textured, and it is light per granule with a large center hole. I use the meter short and trickle up to weight, but then I am really old school! If I am still alive and shooting in 10 years, I will have enough. Ric

I haven't done much with 4759, would like to, but haven't seen any lately, and I suppose I
I am not likely to see any. Oh, well. I have had excellent results across the board with Unique.

it does alright in the 30-06 and even the 22-250, but so does bunch of other powders like 2400 and 2400, and probably 2400 would work too.

I use lots of 2400. It is the powder I got 2 eight pounder of when the third one was getting low. I use more of it in rifle cases than in handguns. I find it does a great job in the 1500-1800 fps window in most bottleneck cartridges. It works well even slower in straight cases like a 45-70.

I have personally never purchased a can of 4759. Then again, I don't use Unique much either. Is that blasphemous?

according to some it is.
but none of them have taken me up on my offer to swap either bulls-eye or unique straight across for red-dot or 2400.

I like Red Dot and 2400 a bunch. I got some Promo to see if it is as good as Red Dot, it was available and cheap. Like 99 bucks for 8 pounds cheap.

I have a few other powders I haven't really used much. Things like 4227, 3031, and Blue Dot come to mind.

Promo is a flake. Loads at same weight as Red Dot, but not same volume. It has a different density, I think it is fluffier than Red Dot.
If it is close to Red Dot then I will be pleased, the price was sure right.

Couldn't take you up, cause 90% of my handgun reloading is done with three of the four, you mentioned. Never tried red-dot....never had the need. Bullseye, I could live without.....if I had to. Same with SR 4759. Rick talked me into a 8 pounder. I am currently using it in 338W with 200 grain boolits. Doesn't cycle my AR-10, so I'll reserve it for the 308 bolt. Between the two, I'll eventually burn it up, if I live that long.

what really sucks is I pretty much had all my loading down to 3 main handgun and 3 main rifle powders with a couple of kickers for specialty rounds.
[like crossover shotgun stuff]
I was just going through the process of burning up all the odds and ends of the remnants I had decided not to use anymore, when all this can't get nothing baloney started.
which kinda caught me with a lot less of what i wanted on hand, but plenty to see me through for a while.
then when things did start appearing again it however wasn't anything I wanted.
but plenty of what I didn't want but could make do with.
so I'm gonna be back in the same boat if I buy enough to last.
or i'll be without any if I let it sit on the store shelves and something else happens [like shrillary in the white HOSE]

I chose option number 1, un-optimum shooting is better than none at all.

It will get better! Stuff is coming in from Australia and St. Marks, FL. With the war winding down, and stocks rebuilding in military stores, more will become available. But there will not be anything from Delaware or Canada. It will be what they sell from Eastern Europe, Israel and St. Marks, FL. We just have to learn to be flexible. Primers are available here since they are not loading .223 and the hoarding craze is over. Ric

primers have been every where this whole time around here.
bulls-eye and unique have been available, so has 700-x.
the occasional jug of this or that [green-dot, BE-86,AM. select] popped up or a while, and then it was a huge flood gate opening.
the flood gate was all rifle powders making the shelves look good, but still none of them what I want/use.

Just before the craze, I stocked up on Unique and 2400, was just about out, but lucked out. I had just relocated from Michigan and purposely let my supply dwindle because I didn't want to transport too much powder. When I got settled, I put in a $600 powder order with PV. Haven't seen either for sale, since then. The only primers that were in short supply, were small pistol, but lately they've become available. Magnum rifle are, currently, hard to find.

+1 on Herco. Especially in larger cases. Compared to Unique, I can't tell much difference in accuracy in 38/357 but in 41/44/45 I get noticeably better accuracy with Herco.

4227 is next on my list to try ( if i can ever find any ).

Slightly off thread but I find No.9 to be an excellent replacement for 2400 that I have not seen for around three years.

Years back I shot a lot of 4759, and then they quit mfg the stuff, and then brought it back for awhile, and now no longer mfg. It was a great powder, but the supply factor is/has been a real PIA. Just like at present, availability (at least local) is a real PIA I have always shot a lot of 2400, and if the supply ever opens up again, will continue to do so. Am down to maybe 3-4 lbs of it. I am playing around with 4227 but am not having a great deal of luck with it so far. For cast bullet shooting, I could live very well with 2400 and Unique, and to add a third it would be Red Dot.
