In my experience 4227 does better in cases no bigger than 44 mag. I've used it with good results in 32-20, 25-20 and 218 bee. Its also supposed to be good in 357 and 44 mag cartridges.

2400, Unique and 4895 are powders I wouldn't want have to do without.

Would love to have been able to stock up on 4759 before it disappeared.

I have had some success with 4227 powder in cast boolit loads in my 30-30 but above that size case I have not…so it is not a powder on my want list.
My staple light to medium rifle powders for cast boolits are unique & 2400. I did pick up a lb of Red Dot last week ..only because I hadn't seen it on my LGS's shelf in 2 years.
at $22.50 that sure was a big jump from the price sticker on my old can of it (Hercules brand back then) from 1980's!
I had started playing with the C.E.Harris Red Dot load in my 8mm and used up the old stuff.
BTW the new stuff is marked "Cleaner burning" on the front label. It appears a Bit Hotter then the old stuff! I'm going to back off 2 full grains and work back up to a good load.
I wasn't happy with the way the primers looked after firing the Harris load with the NEW Red Dot powder!

Jim,

I've shot the 13.5 grs. of Red Dot Load.
It has never shot for me in the 30-06.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong ? ?
That load builds more pressure than a lot of people would think.

Ben,
You are correct on the pressure being higher. While I only went to 13 gr with a 180gr Gas Checked 8mm boolit I could tell the pressure curve was a whole lot different then my normal 19 grains 2400 load with that combination. It didn't kick much but the cases were expanded more then the 2400 loads ( This was using the 1980's Red Dot)
It did give very good accuracy however in that loading but going from 9 grains up to 12 grains of Red Dot with the 130 grain 8 mm boolit was bad They were stringing vertically for some reason.
Another interesting thing I noted was the Red Dot load (All loadings) shot 2 inches left of my normal sight setting I had some of my 180/2400 loads with me so shot them and they all went back to center. It is funny how a powder can change a bullet in windage so noticeably

Hey guys !!! 12.7-12.8 grs of RED DOT has provided some of the best groups ,i.e,11/16" from my 03's I have ever had!
And that means any bullet weight from 180 - 213grns , gas checked., anything above 12.8 grs and things good south !

Winchester primers may be the secret.

I will post groups.

Interesting, I have never observed unburned kernels of 2400. When I load it in 308 or 06, I use dac fill. tlhat may be the difference.
