Using Bullseye in the .30-'06 Without Blowing Yourself Up!

i really avoided the old 0-6 for a long,,, long time.
i popped off a few rounds of a buddy's deer rifle when i was about 12-13 and that was all the bang-flash-ouch i wanted to deal with,,, actually more than i wanted.
took me quite a while to come around with my thinking on the issue, and i dinked around with a few milsurps and cast bullets after acquiring a Garand and not even thinking about firing off a bunch of FMJ's.

i was far too deep into the 7X57 and it's derivatives to give it much thought.
i'd used the various iterations [mostly the ICL i had built] to literally shoot everything from a Moose on down to ground squirrels.
[probably woulda done a mouse too,,, shrug,, but that was not an option that presented itself]

then when i left my last job i decided i wanted a simple rugged plain jane don't care if it gets scuffed up fairly light but very accurate hunting rig.
[got several that are close in the exactness, but they all seemed to miss in one area or another]
i'd almost talked myself into a 270,,, shudder uhhgg, woulda been super easy, i got brass, bullets, a couple of proven loads and 2 die sets.
then there it was,,, a choice between a 308 and a 30-06 in the exact same brand,, make and model,,, both on sale.
picked them both up and held them and played with them,, 0-6 it was.

only rub in the plan?
i re-worked the old ICL over some this winter lightening it down, making the stock fit better, rubbing new finish all over it and finally put a quality scope on it.
i got cast loads for it, a pair of jacketed loads for it which gives it some variety and flexibility,, just not near as much as the 0-6 has.
it'll still most likely be the one out in the hunting field this fall though.
i don't need any flexibility there,,, all i need is to be within 300yds.

well, that rambled.

Chocolate is the most sold confection on the planet .........60% of the humans are allergic to it to some degree .

The 7×57 has literally dropped very likely every 4 legged critter on the planet at least once . Rats to elephant. Now I'd say that makes it pretty darned all around. Unfortunately it has that "it doesn't fit in a short action and doesn't fully use a long action" thing going on . It lingers on with a 2 war head start and 16 years or so on the 06' . I ain't taking it hunting grizz and frankly moose just feels a little sketchy, no it doesn't change knowing the Swedes killed 40 bazillion moose with the 6.5-55 .

Decades ago it was published that the all around sportsman should have a big game rifle suitable for the largest game he or she intended to hunt . A 12 ga shotgun . A 22 RF as nearly identical to the big game rifle as possible , and a pistol such as a 357 mag . Times have changed , tools have changed some . It's still tough to argue with the 22 , 06' , 12 ga , 38/357 , suggestion.

Just keep in mind the minimum cartridge for deer in Maine is 25 ACP.

I know everyone laughs over the .25 auto for deer thing, but to me that was a good thing. No one is going to shoot a deer with a .25 auto but it says to me the DNR's and Fish & Game Depts. have stopped micro managing the firearms we can use for deer and let us decide what is best. Government has a terrible time trusting the public because we all have a terrible time trusting each other. "Oh yeah, I'm fine, but that other mouth breathing idiot over there I ain't so sure of."

Freedom has a price and that price is allowing freedom for the other guy and gal even if you don't exactly like and trust them.

.30-06, well heck I think the biggest problem it has is a hoary ol' timer to young folks, and common as fly specks on a barn window for us older shooters. Yawn, take it for granted, too big, too small, too hot, too cold Goldie Locks, but it averages out as pretty darned useful and you could do a lot worse. Between .30 caliber moulds, and a bazillion iterations of .30 caliber jacketed bullets it would keep a feller shootin' a long time. Uses Bullseye, uses 4831, and everything in between, Yee Ha!

Nevada legal hand gun for big game requires a 4" barrel , 24 cal or larger , and 1.280 case length ......so a custom cylinder in a 4" 357 compatible pistol and 25 cal for the 265 WM and I think the 25-20 are legal for elk as a primary arm .
With the exactly right load and making the MV a 55 gr 223 will make the cut but no PPC is allowed and the old 45-70 300 gr HP Rem in an 1895 GG with a ported barrel , thumb rules for fps/in losses and the ports , misses the 1000 ftlb at 100 yd by about what the 55 gr BT 223 makes it .
