10mm as one and only handgun.

Ive fired 600 rds threw a 10mm 1911.It is fast becoming a favorite.ive shot the lee 180 bullet, from 740 fps,to 1380fps.gun will run that wide of velocity.I could get by with this one gun, very easily.it would be boring, but doable.
That 180 at 1400 is one powerful load!!
The magnum research 1911 is a tremendous value, i high recommend it!!

Shot some 1350 loads today,,got to thinking about a 357 revolver shooting a 160 that hard,is alot more recoil then the auto puts out.

I'm very much a lover of the 1911 platform, but for frequent carry I'd need it to be under 30 oz. Also, at my age, I want something that allows for fairly quick recovery of sight picture. As I understand it, the 10mm has a pretty vigorous recoil.

The two I carry around the homestead are a WW I era manufactured Colt 1911 or a Colt DS. Both are powered by low end loads of Bullseye powder.

I very much like the Dan Wesson Guardian in 45 ACP that my youngest son carries.

Most of you know how I feel about Glocks, however I must say their 10mm is considerably more tame than a Delta Elite. I attribute that to a combination of grip angle/width at the back and ever so slightly lower barrel profile in the hand. With a two-hand hold the Glock was far easier to recover back to the target...ish, I still have 11⁰ grip habits but that's no fault of the pistol.

As long as i dont go over 1150 or so,,the recoil feels very similar to a 45acp..what i notice the most is,,thegun twists more.i have no idea what they use for barrel twist,it may be fast twisted,,because it has a noticable roll,to the recoil. Its a bull barrel,so that helps with muzzle flip.overall,,very easy to control.

The reason for a semi auto is social work. The 10mm is a good one, probably the best, but for me the plus for using an auto is availability of products. So I’ll say with 9mm and 45. That is if I have to use a bottom feeder

10mm is the best MM!! :p;):)

I dont even shoot my Deltas anymore. I like full power 10mm other wise Id just shoot my 40's.

Glock 10mm are things all others are measured against. I like my Glocks.

I cast a bunch of a favorite for light needs. Its a MP 160 I send along with a stiff dose of Power Pistol that clocks 1400 from the 6" barrels. Shoots under a golf ball off hand @ 25 & a soft ball @ 50 yards if you can shoot. I need to try and catch a few but so far haven't been able to.

The idea of a single "do it all" handgun is not a new idea. Nor is it a bad idea.
Beware of the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it.

The 1911 platform is legendary and the 10mm chambering in that platform is well established.

10mm gives you slightly greater magazine capacity over 45ACP in the same package. The 10mm pistol does have an advantage over a similar revolver both in terms of capacity and its slimmer profile.

The 10mm cartridge is extremely versatile and at its upper loadings - very powerful. Its relatively heavy projectile coupled with a small frontal area and high velocity certainly give it great terminal performance.

The 10mm/40 caliber bore size (in both pistol and revolver loads) has been deeply explored over the last 40 years or so.

Can't say the 10mm is my cup of tea, but that's due to my dogmatic views and not any defensible criticism of the 10mm. I'm just too set in my ways.

Having shot the 1911 for over 60 years, I’m not about to change (except for fun projects).

if i had to pick one chambering to carry in Bear country the 10 with a bunch of flat nose shots in it wouldn't be a bad choice.
i generally carry my 445 with the 4" barrel installed and 300gr. bullets, but a bunch of 200-220gr solids would maybe be a better choice when number-7 is required.

:headscratch: Since bigger is better...............44 Mag Desert Eagle is the obvious choice for bear defense, in a bottom feeder. So where does it end?

Something Broom handle like in 500 S&W ....... :)
That's STYLIN'!!

Ahem.

I have had at least one 10mm Auto on staff for over 30 years. It wasn't authorized at work (More's the pity...) but mine have been great tools in the hunting fields or for home defense.

First 2 S&W Gen 3 and now two Glocks fill the bill nicely (20SF and 29SF), and for Glocks and Colts I think Win Silvertip load intensities are about ideal (175 grains @ 1225-1275 FPS). That is a 25% uptick from the 40 S&W, which has pretty decent street creds for canceling armed nonsense in its own right. The S&W Gen 3 can run Norma-level loads (200 grainers @ 1200 FPS) all day and every day, as can the uber-scarce Dornaus & Dixon CZ-75s on steroids. I surely wish that CZ would make their excellent CZ-97 in 10mm, it would be a Dornaus & Dixon revival of sorts.

Even in the Smiths, I didn't exceed 1200 FPS with 200 grainers and went no faster than 1300 FPS with the 175-180 grainers. Those 200s beat yer aspirations up some, and given the 40 S&W's good work as felon repellent, going much past factory specs (Norma or WW/ST) didn't make sense for me. Big bears call for such measures, though--so they would serve a legitimate need.

Despite the fevered statements of 10mm enthusiasts, the 10mm is not a magazine-fed 41 Magnum. Loaded with WW/STHPs, it is a mid-point between 357 Magnum and 41 Magnum. That might be its best niche, actually; most commersh 10mm loads feature a 175-180 grain JHP at 1150-1250 FPS. That level won't break modern 1911 frames, and are a bit easier to control than are the Norma 200s.

"One and only handgun?" Even during fat times, 10mm Auto ammo is a tough find. If you reload, then it might be a good "One & only"--otherwise, no.

Every time I see the 1100 fps 175-180 gr in a 10mm that 940 in a 2.5" 40 XD with a 175 gr cast sure looks good . Not a switch I'd bear hunting but it looks pretty good .

On the topic of One Handgun, what we are really talking about is ONE platform chambered for ONE cartridge. (That decision contains two parts, the gun and the cartridge)

I'm probably going to ruffle some feathers here, but while the 1911 platform is very good and well proven; I'm not certain it would be my choice. Others are welcome to differ.
I'm not denigrating the 1911 in any way, just saying it might not be my pick for a sole handgun.

in 45 it would be a good one for sure, i'd rather have my CZ-in 9mm.
the 10 only gets a nod for bear carry from me because it is on a platform i can afford and it gives enough bang bangs without over recoil to keep on pulling the trigger in a hand to hand situation with something that not only bights but also has a lot more arm strength than i do.

I have been playing with a new G20 and must admit the concept raised here is interesting. I dumped my G27 (obnoxious little $%&#@), maybe Ian bought it.... it was on consignment. Proceeds went towards the G20, much more pleasant to shoot than the G27 ever was even when shooting light loads. Here kitty kitty, no not that, the G20 was a pussy cat.

Now at the risk of causing some of you to reach for your nitro tablets, I did try some 40 S&W's through it. I have read numerous posts on the subject, they ranged from that it is fine i.e. 38 Spcl in 357 Mag, to doing so was a crime against nature, or worse. No need to hash that here it out further, that horse is dead. Anyway it gobbled them up and spit them out faster than mulberries through a duck or a goose, so in a pinch, yea it will work for added flexibility. They fed and were captured by the extractor when striped off the magazine just like a 10mm round.

I hear gasping from some.... relax, I picked up a 40 barrel for the G20. Deep breath now, in nice and slow, now exhale, one more time.... in.... out.... in..... out... in...... feeling better? Put your feet up, breathe, breathe, think about $10/M primers, COWW free for the taking, and $5/M gas checks.
