Sure am glad I paid attention to you guys talking about 2400 in the 45-70. Shot several 3 shot groups into an inch or slightly less at 100 yards. My new favorite load!

I often went higher than 16 gr in 30-06 but found 16 was good in 30-30 with the 165 RD.
2400 is a great powder for mid range loads in rifles. I use more in rifles than handguns. Won't ever be without it.

24 gr of 2400 works great in 45-70 with the 350-420 gr bullets. My Marlin just loves the load.

I saw the 24 grns for ~350 grn in 45-70 all at once and a bunch! It is my next load to try. Thanx! Now also looks like I have a cpl more!

A2400 is hard to beat in the 45/70 case, shot from my 1873 Trapdoor. Attached is the CBA records for Big Bore Military. Interestingly, this is the only record ever set by a bullet from a Lee mould 405 grain HB, and they didn't even answer a "thanks for making my mould" letter.

Brad in 30-06 I often went to 18+ gr with a 168 grn. bullet, but I do stick to 16 to 16.2 with the Ideal 311413 as it doesn't like velocities much above 1600 fps. With bullet weights of 190+ I usually switch to IMR 4895.

For the Trapdoor I also like 10 to 12 grns. of Unique.

Ric - you had great results with the 24/2400/405 Lee HB?!? If so, same mold I have. can't wait to try this load!

Well, it wasn't by the "book". In order to get the bullet big enough to fit the throat, the alloy was linotype, size .462". There were no fillers or wads, I just left the TD on the bags, tapped the case on the rim to settle the powder, and gently slide it into the chamber. The rifle shot 160+ rounds over the weekend and I never patched the bore, NRA formula 50/50. No leading or fouling issues when I got it home, a couple of patches of Ed's Red cleaned it up fine. The bore has "salt and pepper" for a couple of inches in front of the chamber, but I did the old gun trader trick of rubbing in Lee Liquid Alox into the barrel and polishing it up before the match.

The 24 grains of 2400 has shot well in every 45/70 I have had. It is a max load in the TD, about 20,000 CUP, but light in everything else.

KHornet.....Paul, what velocities are you getting with 24 0f 2400? for each of those bullet weights. I have a jug of 2400 that I picked up at a gun show here. I use it a lot in my .44 mag and the .358 Win with cast. I ended up with a beautiful Ruger No1 in 45-70 a few years back and love it.

I dunno about the velocity [cause I never run it over the chrono] but it's getting up to the starting point of where I don't want any more recoil in the 86 browning.

With the 420 I get 1350-1400. I can shoot that load all day long with no recoil issues.

In general, the 2400 loads will run from 1300-1450 with the heavier ones,
and about the same with the lighter ones. I use dac fill in all my 2400 loadings
for 45-70. Realize that that is a big no-no for some, but Lyman used to recommend
it in times past. It has always worked for me so I see no need to fix it. Don't
find recoil excessive at this charge level, regardless of blt. wt.

I've never used a filler in anything. Just never talked to enough folks who had and who I had faith in, to get me to try it. I think at some point in the foreseeable future I'll be trying some dacron fill in the 45-70 when I use 2400 or Unique.
