I was concerned about the rounds feeding out of the mag. box.
The owner of the rifle ( prior to me ) said that he shot Win. 300 gr. factory rounds ( he was a Hog Hunter ), he said the Win. factory ammo fed flawlessly.

All my loads today ran from the mag. box up and into the barrel like water running through screen wire.

Still time for that also.
Or, just buy a HP mould from AL at Noe and keep this one as it.

I don't have "40 Years With The 45/70" like Paul Matthews has had, but my quarter-century-plus has shown it to be an incomparable caliber for its intended purpose (pacifying "hostiles") and a number of other uses. I survived the Ruger Madness with my #1 and 50 of the 350 grain Hornady 350 grain SPs @ 2100 FPS, as well as the 550 grain Mastodon Flatteners (Lyman #462550) at 1500-1600 FPS. The late Col Askins referred to recoil levels of that sort as "exhilarating". My retrospective as to that is that The Colonel was dropped on his head as an infant perhaps one time too many.

The old black powder calibers ALL do pretty decent work at their old BP velocity levels, if you accept their trajectory limitations as a "given" and are willing to stalk a bit closer in the hunting fields. The laser-like trajectories of the 22-250s and their ilk have turned our heads. Goodness knows, the 45/70 is a lot more fun to shoot with a 400 grain-class bullet at 1300 FPS than it is at 1700-1800. There is more to shooting than just trajectory tables. LOOK OUT, DEER is correct.

Real nice rifle & shooting, Ben.

Makes my shoulder sore just thinking about full power loads from it. I know your well adept at mitigation of that nastiness though. 9-1100fps bout all I'd want in that one. Handi & capable outfit for sure.

Ben, you're not helping me say "no" to building that .458 SOCOM AR-15 upper I've been dreaming about.

Already have a nice selection of bullet moulds in the 450-530-grain range, a .45 caliber silencer, and at least nine will fit in a 30-round 5.56 Pmag with no modifications.

9 of those in a mag. would be impressive.
I wish you well on your build.

You have no idea how insanely jelious I am of that rifle. I've wanted a bolt action 45/70 for some time. They have a Lee navy magazine rifle at the LGS for 900 bucks...but out of my price range. That one looks like a real keeper, and that paint looks good too.
