I once read you should have enough primers to shoot the last charge of powder.
That's all well and fine but the number of primers in the math is hard when it comes to something like Unique where the charge can be anywhere from 280-2200 per lb .......it's easy for 4350 or 4831 @ 35-55 gr per but when it 2.5-29 gr it's hard .......
Then some goober got me started shooting BP ........ Do you have any idea how much of that is in a 1# can of Rose dust ?
Yeah .........can't even do the math on that .......

So I have what I had for 209s and a couple Dad left , I bought $100 worth about every 6weeks in 14- 16' after they came under 40/100 . I ran out of SP and didn't see any of those or #41s for 2 years so we bought LRP and LPP . Shotshells within the intended use windows were so cheap it wasn't worth it to load them , often over $1/box cheaper than my cost for exactly what I was loading .......

I probably won't NEED to buy any more being down to a couple 1000 rounds a year and having apparently lost the desire to hunt anything anymore my shooting will probably decline even further .

Work up a load and load a couple 100 or whatever I have in brass and put it away ...... Yeah I guess that's where I am today .

Component prices remain ridiculous. I did grab 2K x CCI #500 OEM/unplated primers a couple months ago. The pricing was obscene but nowhere near as ridiculous as some online sellers are asking.

I'm in good shape components-wise for now. I rather doubt that prices will deflate for a while, the buccaneers and profiteers seem to be running the market of late. I can still shoot, and now that my eyesight is straightening out and my leg and prosthetic have ceased their 'argument', I might be able to put some rounds on paper. It has been a while.

Sometimes just being in the right place at the right time works out very well..
Percussion caps... Was in a LGS in central Florida 2 years back. Saw some musket caps marked $3 in an clearance rack "50% Off". Took 5 packs up front. Young lady at the register mentioned no one in a year was buying caps. Owner had said if someone would buy them all it would be $1 a pack of 100 caps. Guess what I did !

Glad you're felling better Al. I noticed you were a bit absent for a while.

Not buying primers at $.10 apiece. Cap lock pistol and flintlock rifle until the surplus comes around again.
Even at current prices, 22 LR, averages $.10 a shot...............whole lot less work, involved. Until primers come down, I won't be buying them. Probably, have a lifetime supply, anyways. Then there's the loaded ammo that's squirreled away..............22 LR, included.

On one hand, I'm with @RicinYakima , because I just enjoy handloading ammo. I want to load something!

On the other hand, I'm with @Brad . not wanting components tied up. Who knows when I'll get to shoot something if I DO load it now?

I have enough primers that I could do some shooting and not worry about running out, but I need the time to do it. If I load something up and don't get around to shooting it for two months, I may get bored with that idea by the time I DO have time to shoot it. I'm still trying to use up some stuff I loaded in the early nineties. I finally broke down some stuff I loaded in the eighties. Even without a progressive, seems I can load faster than I can shoot.

By the way, I'm down to about 50 rounds of 44 Special that I loaded in the mid-nineties/early '00s. I've been through a number of different 44s and moulds in the interim and most of what I have loaded was tailored to something I no longer have. Solved THAT problem by finally settling on ONE 44 Special with good dimensions and about anything shoots in it.

I hear you. Been through three S&W and many Ruger Special/Magnums. The one I have kept is a 1916 Colt New Service I rebarreled and recylindered into 44 Special. Not only shoots better, but weights less and is a fine single action, since I can't reach the trigger double action. The one load is 6.2 grains of SR7625 and Lyman 429421 sized .431".

i'm at the point of what i got is what i got.
i may add another [lucky find] one into the mix, but i decided i'm really not looking for anything until i at least work up one good cast bullet load for my non hunting rigs.
that's gonna take a while, i got a lot of orphans stuck in a corner here and there.

Went to the Sportsman Warehouse in Medford which had some powder behind the counter. Prices were about $54 a pound.
Didn’t have anything I wanted to branch out into especially at that price.
PV had 8 pound jugs of 2400 for $248 and some 231 at $32 a pound. Should be delivered today.
