Alliant suspends all powder shipments

Vista Outdoors just sent PV a message that all Alliant powders are suspended for the future because of NO nitrocellulose.

I have Unique at $500/lb if anyone needs any!

I hope everyone has stocked up. The rest of the available powders are going to take a hit real fast after this news. I was going to get a new barrel for one of my ar15's but I think I may just go get some powder.

Yep, I pulled the plug on a new Contender carbine barrel, which means I also won't be buying another action or stock set, new dies either.

How the supposed fevered buying frenzy continues with prices soaring, I just don't know, but I'm out. Actually have been for some time. I just keep waiting for people to stop buying stuff simply because they can't afford it.

I think I am just going to stock up on more 22rf. The more this stuff happens the more I want to just stop reloading. And THAT is their plan. At my current rate I am good for 10 years or more. I might not have enough of the actual powders I normally use but I have A LOT of other powders that will work just as good. Right before the potato in chief was elected I was buying every type of powder I could find.

I have had a feeling something like this was going to happen. I have been buying 22 guns and ammo. Seems like this is about the only thing that is not being effected. YET!!! Anyway. SW supposedly was doing the same thing as this. But the guy that does the FB part of SW got mad at me because I said they were no longer importing powder. But according to him they are but not enough to get to wholesalers. So I asked if he was just selling to commercial loaders but he would not answer and threatened to ban me from his page.

If we get in a shooting war, the lack of material will soon become apparent. OSHA regulations have severely hampered any explosive or powder manufacture in the USA. The startup and continued burdened cost for manufacture prohibits new startup without excessive capital backing. Several of us investigated this four years ago and found reluctance for this industry from anyone willing to back new plants. The fabled new plant in Texas producing primers is only selling to comemrcial reloaders or their own subsidiary.

I have in stock.
16 lbs 2400
7lbs Unique
11lbs Redot
2 lbs bullseye
1 lb Greendot.
Those are the only Alliant powders I use.
Pretty easy for me to sub out any of those if need be.
Not that I want to….
I think you may be mistaken... You likely missed a few decimal points..
1.6 pounds 2400
.07 pounds Unique
.11 pounds Reddot
.02 pounds Bullseye
.1 pounds Green Dot.
Typos happen, just like tragic boating accidents... This is the internet. Many folks look at things on the internet...
;)

Sad to hear that you are so short of Alliant powders until you get back on your feet again, & things get better all around for all of us. ;)

OpSec =Operational Security...
Back when my old man was alive and during WWII it was, "Loose lips Sink Ships"...
If ya know how the boat is rocking.

;)

YMMV, of course.

It is easier to dry up the supply chain for ammo and components than to ban and confiscate evil assault weapons. The Biden administration will do everything possible to make powder, primers and ammunition scarce, expensive and heavily regulated. Observe what is happening in California now. If Biden is re-elected expect the same nationwide.

Their prices were already skyrocketing compared to the increases from other suppliers! I bit the bullet and bought 8lbs of Unique and 5lbs of RL7 a few months ago. It HURT PLENTY, but I have it and for the time being I can reload what I desire instead of the supply chain negatively influencing the direction of my whims.

Damn it, quit hogging all the tinfoil. My hat needs a couple more layers too!

Domestic production of new nitrocellulose base material is allocated completely to DoD requirements. Not to civilian production. The majority of US produced sporting powders use either imported nitrocellulose from Brazil, Japan or Canada or recycled nitrocellulose base recovered from expired, military surplus propellants. Some imported Euro powders are manufactured using new nitrocellulose base from Sweden, Finland or France.

I read about the nitrocellulose shortage a week or two ago. That article attributed the shortage to stoppage of the appropriate cellulose itself because most of it came from China. Maybe environmental regulations make it difficult, but at the time I thought that it would be far less risky to do the nitrating locally rather than ship huge quantities of already nitrated cellulose around the world.

I'm having difficulty understanding how restoring domestic production of strategic industries isn't the only and constant topic in Congress.
That doesn't generate votes.

The issue has been for years: what to do with the thousands of gallons of acid waste from making nitrocellulose.
