Alliant suspends all powder shipments

I was at the NRA show yesterday and talked to some of the guys at the Hodgdon booth. They said that barring anything new, they feel like it's about as bad as it's going to get, and for them, things are actually better than they were a while back. They were frustrated that they were starting to catch up heading in to the second half of last year, but then October 7 threw it all out the window. They think they'll get back to that point within the next year or so.

Which kind of tells me that it's what I suspected, which is that Alliant, having more military related product lines, is just squeezed more than the others because of their military contracts. That has been evident in how their products have consistently been some of the hardest to get for the past several years.

Another thought I just had is that it says a lot about the two companies that Hodgdon was at the show, but Alliant was not. One might conclude that Hodgdon is a little more interested in the consumer market than Alliant.

Vihtavuori also had a small presence there.

Alliant also owns LC , FC , Win ,and most of CCI/Speer/Blazer. I thought they got RP ammo also . So yeah I can see where the priority has shifted.

On the other hand I've been in places that I'm sure haven't changed the base stock in decades.

223 packs 480 per can , 4 cans per box ,36 boxes per pallet, 11 pallets per truck , 3.5 trucks per rail car .....

While there we once shipped 1100 20' containers in 22 days ......those containers will take 10 pallets but typically only get 8 due to weight limits and dunnage required.

That particular location 15 yr ago could have could have kept that up for probably a year without any back fill . That one was on the BRAC list circa 2004 and could have put any 3 of the 7 depots also listed in the Mississippi Valley into storage . I missed out on the Gulf War run but it was about that level . The math doesn't work for me but then I never thought chicken farms would be legislated out of existence in California and Arkansas would have to feed the LA basin and Sacramento much less Reno .

I worked with Hercules and ATK people back in the day. The industrial and defense business got the priority. As I recall, Alliant's domestic powder comes from a subsidiary, New River Energetics, that is a tenant at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant. ATK was a long time civilian operator of the plant, but BAE has been running it for a while now.

Toilet paper shortage is likely as on another forum they are praising it make BP instead of charcoal. Next thing you know they will be collecting the urine of nuns for the nitrates.
I just pyrolized another four rolls tonight. Only Cottonelle Comfort Care though, the others aren't nearly as good.

If bamboo TP turns out even better, and there's a good chance it might, then look out.

From my initial "Let's see if Jake is serious" test run. He was.

I won these with homemade black powder and homemade flints back in March, so don't laugh too hard..

Going thru my powder to component ratio. Just realized since. My son sold his 410 to help buy an AR. And since I no longer load full power .357.
I have absolutely no use for 7 lbs of H110. Nor probably ever will as my means to aquire new stuff is diminishing. Thinking maybe I could trade it some where for some Unique, lue Dot or W231.
Hate to just dump it. Like 250 bucks I would be throwing away.

Is this "pryolizing" the same process I use when I make char-cloth for starting flint & steel fires?

Um, maybe a 300 BO upper will find it’s way home to your house someday!

Wasn't vv the one with the built in shelf life failures? Maybe it was someone else ......
FWIW, I had a lot of N150 from 1994 that went bad in 2022. I noticed that an unopened container was swelled, once opened I could smell the acrid aroma. Also, the load that I was going to use would overflow the case. I do have other VV powders from the same era have no problems. I ended up using the 15 pounds I had to light my brush pile and fertilize the lawn.
