You wouldn't think that a $275 break open , single shot rifle that weighs 5.5 lbs ( less the scope and mounts ) would be capable of this kind of accuracy. The rifle has a 22" flutted barrel.

I shot this group at 50 yards , 5 shots, 17.0 grs. of 2400 with the 31141 HP , sized to .310".

Wow Ben! I would not have thought. I was looking at a few of those around Christmas time. Thinking It may help my cast bullet caliber craving!
I will have to wait a few months to see what my work situation is like But that one may answer my need for a 30-06 to play with

Ben;
I rather think that you have opened my eyes! That would have nearly been my last choice of a 30'06 platform (I'm a bolt action guy at heart).

However, I have fancied a break open for a "bunny gun" (.32 S&W Long or .32 H&R Magnum). I actually had a TC Carbine and was working with it when I lost the vision in my right eye. Since then, I have been "confined" to handguns. I haven't lost my interest, tho'...

Great results! Seems like you have a WINNER!

Nope Jim, No 30-30.

And as a matter of fact, I don't believe they are made in 30-06 any longer.
They are fine rifles, hope you can find one in a caliber you'd like.

Here is some reading for you on the CVA Scout :

I'm liking the cva more and more watching your results.
I sure like the stock design(semi pistol) better than the pistol grip on my Encore.
Took a bit of time to adjust to the Encore grip from the bench for me.
Off hand i never notice it though.

I still remember the day I bought this rifle, when
I picked this one up, it felt like a toy.

Catch is,..........it is no toy !

I wouldn't shoot it with full power loads! For a cast shooter it's a handi one. I wouldn't want an 06 less than 8lb without the optic for full house loads-ouch.
The inexpensive options today are nice. Several manufacturers are making darn accurate rifles in that price range. I almost picked up a ruger american used after handling in 308. The low dollar savage options seem like fine buys too.
We've taken many deer with a cva wolf. It's a break action 50 inline. Nuthin fancy but, does everything it should & I only paid $98 for it.

I would love to have one of the scouts in 35 rem. Lol hopefully i "won't" see one when i have a little extra money in my pocket. It is a shame they're not available in 30/30 too.

I need to find a 35 Remington rifle myself. I've had good luck with that round in my contender although I've never shot cast in it.

I've seen a few CVA Scouts in .35 Rem locally in gun shops.
That would be a great cartridge, although I lean in the direction of the .358 Win which unfortunately isn't chambered in the CVA Scout.
The 358 Win. ( I own two rifles chambered in 358 Win. ) is a GREAT cast bullet firearm.
It will take care of any animal that I am likely to walk up on.

They make it in 35 Whelen and 45-70. I bet that would get your attention in that light rifle.

GaryN ,

I did not know that they made a 45/70 ? ?
I checked their web site.
You're right, not only do they make a single shot 45/70 , but
they also make one in .444 Marlin.

What? A 4.5 pound 444 Marlin or 35 Whelen? I bet that gets your attention.

Brad,

Might shake out a filling or two when you pull the trigger ?

The 30-06 with mild cast bullet loads is a joy to shoot however.
I really like my little CVA Scout !

As a cast bullet rifle it is great. Even for an experienced shooter some heavier loads could be worked up to.
Just imagine a 12 year old getting one for Christmas. Bet a few factory loads would creat one hell of a flinch.

How bad could it be Brad? I've fired full 444 loads in a 10 inch handgun.

But you are a big, burly man!

Recoil in a handgun is different. The gun can swing easily and the arms can pivot. A rifle will smack the shoulder and cheek.

I have no trouble with my 309 JDJ barrel in my Contender but wouldn't enjoy the same load in a similar weight rifle against my shoulder.

Mechanics plays a huge role. Just think of how a different stock design can change felt reoil. The key words are felt recoil, not actual recoil.
