Experiences with Marlin 1895G?

I don’t see much need for a 500 gr bullet in the Marlin.
I am not shooting buffalo or huge bears so need for me. Recoils picks up quickly as well.

I used to own a 350 and 425 gr RD mould. Used the 425 on deer twice. It certainly works. I just grew to dislike using a GC and the tumble lube grooves weren’t my thing.

I will say that mine is pretty hard to find a bad load for, it just seems to shoot everything well.

Brad I agree with you on the 500. But, will because I can.
But I think the 350 weight is about ideal, but I have nothing to base that on. Just an opinion.

I said no need, but I sure understand a desire to just see what happens. I sure know I have done stuff like that myself over the years.

Would agree that a 350 is about ideal for most of what needs doing. I use a 420 because I have one that shoots really well.

I have the 500 , actually 534 gr with my 45 pistol alloy , because at 1100 fps MV it has the same flight as the 275 flexy point Horny go fast thing and after driving the 458-255 RF to 2000 fps MV just to say I did and the accompanying headache i decided slow and fat that hits the 200 yd berm in the same place and .05 second longer flight time was a way better deal for wet work .

The 405 will get it done but if I can do it with an alloy that will swell up at sub sonic and stay in the 3rd little pig after whacking the wolf too , so much the better .

I learned about applied mass acceleration as it applies to rates of acceleration and total applied force when I was shotgunning and I found that the 1500 fps MV 1-1/16 oz steel was a lot more pleasant to shoot than the 1200 fps 1 oz D&Q loads . Then I found that similar loads at similar MV with Blue Dot were less brutal to shoot than the upper limits of Red Dot and even many of the middle loads of Unique. Of course I was comparing 1-1/8 oz loads of 7-8s to 5-6s and 1-1/4 oz 2-4s so there's perception involved also .
In the case of any projectile approaching and exceeding an ounce I can fully assure you that the rate at which it reaches it's terminal acceleration plays a significant role in the shooters desire to apply it .

We play a game with every caliber we love or hate or use because of xxx reason that may or may not have any reason at all applied . Mostly it's dwell time and energy exchange on terminal arrival.
The big 45s let you really see how it works in a hands on way .

Brad I think Mr. 462 was referring to was the pointy 500 grain LEE. I use that for my 458x2 before I found the Arsenal 370.
The 458 has to have at least semi pointed to feed properly.
I bought a second LEE 500 to have it cut down by removing the base and leaving the lube groove which happens to be the correct diameter for a gas check. End weight would be about 380 gas checked. The idea was nothing harder than BHN of 12 +or-, then Powder Coating. So with the check Could possibly push it to 2100 to 2200.

I shot my first leverguns silhouette match with my Marlin. All I had for loads was the 425 RD on top of a bunch of 4895. Left over hunting loads. Went in the 1650-1700 fps range.
damn did those chickens go down! Any I hit went down quit smartly. After 70 or so of those loads I was sore as hell.

I bought the Lee 500-grainer and as I mentioned it was one of Shirley's masterpieces. I can't recall everything that was wrong with it, and though I was able to correct some there were others that defied my patience level. I gave the mould to Rich and he seems to have done a masterful job of correcting Shirley's masterpiece.

In turn, he gave me some very nicely cast Lyman 535-grainers. Even with minimum amounts of 2400, shooting them off the bench was not as enjoyable as I wanted it to be. I gave the remaining bullets to a range regular who has a gorgeous 45-100 C. Sharps (black powder only rifle) and he was thrilled.

Throwing that much lead can’t be fun for long in a light rifle. I have a Ruger #1 in 45-70 Paul gave me. It will take loads with a 500 gr bullet I am not interested in ever trying. Way too light of a rifle for that stuff.

I have not corrected the final defect which appears to be a raised area around the bottom pins . I just don't know yet how exactly I'm going to remove the pins , the hump , peen the holes tight enough to hold the pins and not raise the hump again without sacrificing vital heat mass on the nose of the mould that doesn't have enough to begin with . A 1/4" coned square HP has possibilities.

The RCBS FP 45-500 only has about a .440 nose above the crimp groove . It's a lot of bullet in the case .

My Pedersoli/Navy Arms .45-70 rolling block, with its 30" half-octagon half-round bull barrel weighs 11 pounds. I've accuracy loads with Lyman's 457193 405-grainer along with Unique and 2400 that are all-day bench shooters. Call me a recoil wimp, but the Lee 500-grainer and the Lyman 535-grainer start to wear at 10 rounds.

my brother has a Marlin 1895 in 45-70 (sometime in the early to mid 2000's). he uses a (i think i'm about to throw up) factory loaded Hornady gummy tips. i gave my brother 10 cartridges of 405gr FNPB and Varget and he did a 2 1/2 group at 100 yards (all 10 shots, bench), but he don't like my "cowboy loads" (he refers to trapdoor loads). they are to "pansies" for him. the next time he shot, i gave him one cartridge that wasn't "pansies" for him. it was a 405gr FNGC with a "real MAN" of IMR3031(i believe). after he shot and got done whining about his shoulder, i told him he can't shoot the "real man load".
